Currently reading Ben Hogan's "The five fundamentals"

Obviously this book was written quite a few years ago.

The question is, "How relevant are the teachigs to todays game?"

The first chapter discusses and instructs on the grip. According to Hogan, the club shaft is gripped with the left hand from the heel of the palm across to the index finger pad nearest the palm (if you get my meaning.
Nowadays I see many instructions which suggest gripping the club across the fingers only.

Who is right?

I think that book is rubbish, out dated and contains nothing useful.

The fundamentals of the golf swing are as follows

1: Return the club to the same place every time.
2: With enough power to play the intended shot.
3: Control the direction.

I think it still has a place. The guy was a legend who spent years perfecting his style.

If it works for you and you like what you read then it's still relevant. There are a fair few ways to get the ball around and I wouldn't have thought listening to Ben Hogan would do you much harm.

I'm going to put my head above the whatever and say you lot are a bunch of miserable gits.

I bought this book on the recommendation of my first ever golf pro.

I followed Hogan's advice to the letter re; the grip and not one pro has ever suggested I change my left hand placement.
Hogans idea about "plane" (although not exactly invented by him) is worth studying and in general, the book is a worthy read.

i.i.r.c. Hogan felt the club could be supported by the "palm" section of the hand and the first finger (index) only. In the book, it looks like the club must be "in the palm" vs. "in the fingers" but when you get it right it tends to move itself so it runs from the base of the little finger to the first joint of the index finger. This IS almost in the fingers.

I feel that the drawings can be misleading in this respect because if the hand is "opened up" the club runs to much into the palm but once closed, it's actually a good position.

Have a read here.

Some food for thought. :)
