I've watched countless videos, read many books but one thing confuses me.

Many instructional pieces conflict when it comes to the grip.

Some say grip the club with the fingers only. Some suggest having the club lying diagonally across the left hand with the butt around halfway up the palm, emerging on the first pad of the index finger (if you get my drift)

There just doesn't seem to be a "one size fits all" method of gripping the club.
I have to say the club feels more solid and secure when gripped in the palm, but you lose the wrist flexibility gained from gripping with the fingers only.

Which school of thought do you subscribe to when it comes to gripping the club?

I take a natural grip on the club, by that I mean I do not force my hands into any contorted positions. I hold the club as my hands naturally fall onto it. I see lots of golfers turning their hands this way and that on the club in all sorts of twisted grips and they never work. For me, bring your hands together onto the grip and voila' hit it.

there cannot possibly be a 'one size fits all' or they would only need to make one size of glove.

there are certain basics but where your hands ultimately go has to be governed by size and shape, flexibility, comfort - what is practical for you.

Its taken me about 8 months to get a comfortable and consistent grip. It might be uncomfortable to change grip but its worth it once it feels natural. I keep telling my friends to change and they say it feels unnatural but if its the correct 'neutral' grip and you wanna play consistent then just keep practicing. Ive got my clubs next to me all the time and I pick them up every 30 mins and waggle them around even when sitting at my PC all day!

Have you tried bigger grips at all? If you have big hands lke me it was a nightmare to get comfortable with the 'stick' for a long time.

Have you been getting some coaching from Pete Cowen? That's his preferred method of gripping the club.

I have just changed to an overlap grip from an interlock, i grip mainly in my fingers, and find it comfortable for me. I have also found more consistancy in my swing with the overlap, but maybe it just works better for me. I would say find a grip that works and go with it!! :)

Hmmm. We had some discussion on this t'other day. I use a left hand grip where the club runs from a cm or two below the base of the little finger to the 1st joint of the index finger. Not dissimilar to this

It seems natural enough, if I hang my hands loose and bring the left hand in to meet the grip, this is the line that the grip seems to make across my hand.

I don't get the squidgy thing(!) this bloke seems to have with his palm, but I can support the club with that area and the index finger a la Hogan.

Works for me. Not for all, I guess.

Grip is probably the area that gives me the biggest concern.

A slight (un-witting) change of grip has such an effect on where the ball ends up I sometimes grip the club and wonder how and where my hands are supposed to go!! Mind freeze.

Interlock is more comfortable for me, though I do change to the overlap if I'm struggling with a slice.

I know how you feel! :o

Although my grip never really alters per se, if the club is sitting fractionally open or closed "in" that grip, I get stressed. I twist the grip deliberately for certain shots....

Iv changed to the overloap grip recently and im starting to get more consistency with it....Im releasing the club much better with it that the interlock.I hold the club more in my fingers with the base of the club sitting in the crease between my small finger and the heel pad in the palm of my hand.It felt very weird at first but now its second nature.

Also as others have said there is no one correct grip...Its whatever works for you...Everyone is unique.

Overlap grip for me; medium-sized hands using off-the-shelf grips and clubs. I'm more consistently rubbish with it than the baseball or interlock.

Golf For Dummies suggests the grip should rest inside the first knuckle of your pinky (so touching the pad of your palm) and the second knuckle of your index/pointer finger, promoting a more finger-based grip. For me, it means I hold the club less tightly, which can only be good.

Interlocking. I have small hands and so it was the one I was shown as a kid and never really changed. I did flirt with overlapping when I got back into golf about eight years ago but wasn't comfy or consistant with it
