how old is your golf club ?

2007 was our Centenary year. There were a lot of special events that year culminating in a Centenary Dinner held at a function suite at Murrayfield. A grand night that was... I think.

We had a team do a lot of research and a commemorative history of the club was published as part of the Centenary celebrations. Every member got a copy.

Lots of interesting history, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sasson may well have played the course whilst convalescing after wartime injuries in WW1. Two members were awarded VCs, one in each WW. We have an interesting plaque with the story behind these brave men in our main lounge. The 5th & 6th fairways were turned over to crop production in WW2 and our car park was a bomb shelter at that time also.

1978 built on the old waste tip outside Huddersfield.
matured quite nicly with a damm site more trees than when I first played it in 1981.
Nice clubhouse now with planing permision for a snooker room sun room.
A 15 bay driving range and a good pro shop with about 10 training assistants as well as full time pro's.
Caird Park in Dundee was my old club from a sprog to single figure handicaper, then i left and joined the Grey Funnel Line.
Now trying to find my past form.

a varied lot of posts between new clubs and established club, like most towns ,cities new courses have sprung all over the place up beside me there are a few but they seem to stuggle for members i don't no why as some are decent tracks.

grumpyjock ,caird park is still going strong fella ain't played it in years played "campie" last year was in good knick and bloody tough ,better track imo than its neighbour downfield.
when I go for a visit its Campie first and then Caird. Both have changed since the early 70's as has D Field.
The mates i played with then are getting thin on the ground now, so I play whit whoever is avalable.
young jackie from Caird has given up the pro shop and gone back on the trail again, might give him a call in June when im up again.
Might even try and make it a GM forum meet
Will be in the area 16th & 17th June before we have the BASF open at Kinross on the 20th.

Founded in 1914. Designed by J H Taylor (5 times Open Champion) and Harry Colt. Some members are working on a history for our centenary.

Our first pro was Abe Mitchell who later went on to give lessons to Samuel Ryder (who founded the Ryder Cup) when he moved to Verulam Golf Club in St Albans. Abe Mitchell was one of the leading players of his day and had good finishes in a number of Opens and played in 3 Ryder Cup matches. He is also reputedly the model for the figure on top of the Cup. I always like to think that makes him the only player to have been present at every match.

Max Faulkner, Open Champion in 1951, was also an assistant pro for a couple of years.

Cracking looking course Chris looking forward to playing it in June

It looks just like the photos on the website on a good day (not so much when it is pissing down :D) but with the changes Paul McGinley is making to the bunkering etc it will look superb. Play it you shall, any idea of which day and I will get time off too.

Just joined Kirkhill Golf Club...loving it.

From the website:

The original Trustees of the Club showed courage and imagination in requesting from James Braid an 18 hole layout. Braid, the first man to win the Open Championship five times, had a prodigious talent both as a golfer and a course designer, and with a minimum of excavation work, he completed the task in four months!

Kirkhill Golf Club was founded in 1910 from some former members of Cambuslang Colf Club. The Club house was built as a dwelling house, just in case the new venture did not work out. The founders certainly had some vision, energy and only four years after the founding of the club they arranged an exhibition golf match which was held in June 1914. The legendary golfer Harry Vardon, 6 times Open champion played with George Duncan who also won the Open in 1920.
