How Long?

The need for length off the tee is surely dictated by the hole. Golf is a strategic game. Dog legs, bunkers, water hazards etc all mean that accuracy off the tee and positioning on the fairway are important. That's why the pros so often take 3 woods or long irons off the tee. If you are playing a long hole with a straight wide fairway and no hazards, give it a whack with the driver. If it's a tight short par 4, take 3 wood or hybrid off the tee for position.

Often a hole offers up choices, then it'a about risk and reward. That's where the fun starts. :D

In fairness to all the replies im in agreement with the majority.....
I do believe that distance is an important factor and im not just talking about off the tee with a driver....As Imurg has said he'd rather hit a PW in than a 6 iron from 100 yards...
But a driver will be used by most for less than 20% of shots per round....At least 60% will be on or around the green or from 100 yards out.

What i guess i was tryin to get at was yes i like to hit full shots at 100% strength but i felt like i was using too little club at that and opted for one more....An example in point is that in normal conditions and off the fairway my 9 iron is far more accurate than my PW from 115-117mtrs(125 yards or so)....And im not really throttling back on that too much....I guess that this is average but so what...

Yes i could maybe welt it harder and get more distance but its definatly at the expense of accuracy....

You should write to all the Tour Pros and tell to simply hit the ball shorter but more accurately.

In their way timgolfy that is what the tour pro's do.

They very rarely swing out of their boots. I'd imagine Rory et al could hit 350 yard drives if they did give it everything but they don't all the time.

It's just that their 80/90% swing is relative to our 120% swing.

I've asked you these before a couple of times but you've not answered and I'm genuinely interested on your take:

a) why do you think everyone on here wants to "hit it shorter"? Do you really believe every golfer isn't trying to maximise every aspect of their game?

b) why do you think your approach is "adequate" and everyone elses is inadequate?

Not taking the mick just interested. I've never known someone in any walk of life be so dominated by a single train of thought and blinkered to other opinions.

It's each to their own Kid but here's an example from yesterday..
Par 5 17th. I'm 105 from the flag (laser) slight breeze into the face. For me it's either a slightly hard GW or a slightly soft PW.
Went with the GW and put it to 5 ft. Missed the putt as it went sideways off a ridge but the approach was spot on. If I'd tried to cosy the PW I doubt I'd have been that close.
But that's me, the way I play. Wont be the same for everyone but it pays to try these things and work out what's best for you.
