How far?

Was at Ashbury Hotel (Devon) over the weekend for our yearly society do. Well on one of the holes, the 16th Beeches who know the course, they had the flag just about 9 to 10 foot from the edge of the green.
Obviously there must be a minimal distance but none of us knew what it was, can any one advise me?

From what I can see there is no minimum distance, but the unwritten rule would appear the hole should be at least four paces from the fringe.

I was watching Golfing World on Sky Sports 2 yesterday and there was a bit that mentioned the differences between the euro and PGQ tour. I believe that on the PGA tour the minimum is 3ft from the edge of the green and on the Euro Tour it's 5ft.

Either that or they were talking about the differences between the US Open (which uses USGA rules, I think) and the other PGA tour events and it was 3ft minimum at the US open but 5ft minimum for the rest of the PGA Tour.

i.i.r.c. it USED to be 4 paces on in either direction but they stopped that rule about 5 years ago.
