How big is a gimme in your world?

Are you speaking from recent experience (yours and mine)?

No, I don't remember you missing any putts..... I will remember my missed putt on the par 3 16th hole for many years though

added: Actually I just remembered your effort on the par 3 over 'Leftie's Pond' :whoo:

I think in a competition Match play format, that the maximum distance of a gimme putt must be decided before the 1st ball is struck on the 1st tee.

If you agree 12" as the distance for a gimme, then anything outside that can be given on a hole but anything inside that is automatically given. Speeds the game up and still keeps the pressure on long putts because if they finish outside 12" the chance is if you've got the game your going to have to putt it again, and the nerves may then kick in for both puts not just the close one.

I always keep a good eye on opponents putting and if they are pretty consistent from distance I'll give them a putt from about 3 or feet feet if I'm confident of taking the hole with my next putt. Try to get them complacent

Will certainly not agree before the start of the game because a 12 inch putt on the first will be different to a 12 inch putt on the last or uphil etc etc

Will judge each putt on its own merit

Not sure where you're getting that from. Not in any rule book I've seen. I'd never agree a gimme distance. Conceding and making players putt's an integral part of matchplay psychology and one if its great nuances

I never said it was a rule or written anywhere, just what I find works best with the people I play with in comps, we might agree 6" 12" but then anything above that can be given, it just speeds things up. Like you say it is one of the nuances but needs to be balanced with some players fannying about

Have to be honest if you played me and suggested we give all putts within a certain distance, I'd politely refuse and insist we holed out unless conceded on a hole by hole basis. How long does it really take to replace a mark ball, take a practice swing or two and make the stroke? If you have partners taken any length of time I suggest you need to talk to them about pace f play rather than discussing gimme lengths

I would be more than happy to hole out everything if we played, that would be the agreement. Each to their own.

And there is only so many times you can ask people to pick up the pace.

Anyone who wants gimmes does not fancy them so putt out , pace of play is down to everyone and if slow they should be told to get a move on

he just wants to speed up the game..........job done; I would simply claim the match there and then citing an attempt to agree to amend the rules of golf!

returning to the simple question originally asked.......in matches I give someone any putt I don't believe they will miss if they make it 10 times. I have also been known to give putts slightly outside this definition where I believe that damage to the green or hole would significantly contribute to the question of whether they player will hole out.

in any other situation where other parties outside that game are involved, you hole everything out ie if 4 of you are playing a friendly stableford/medal/whatever and 3 of you agree the fourth's next putt is conceded then fine.

But if it is a proper competition then you both risk DQ for agreeing to waive the rules which only allow a player to concede the "next stroke". See Decision 1-3/2 Agreement to Concede Short Putts

Ha ha, but a bit dodgy to try to claim the match on an attempt to agree to waive the Rules!!! :D
