How big is a gimme in your world?

In Stableford/Medal there's no such thing as a gimme in my book. Matchplay is a different matter: it becomes a tactical part of the game especially on the first hole. Do you fancy that 2 to 3 foot putt when you opponent is a bit longer? Me,I'd rather give him/her a gimme and hope he/she reciprocates. If not the gloves are off; if yes it sets the standard at least until the match gets tight towards the end and gimmes fall into the realm of hens teeth.

Depends a lot on how the match stands. Give a few long ones (3 feet) early on then later in the match when it really starts to count make him putt a couple of shorter ones he's expecting to be given.

Probably a little underhand but it's all part of the game unless it's no gimmes!

In stableford and matchplay there's no such thing as a gimme in anyone's book, I hope!

In my matchplay comps I like to state at the beginning 'no gimmies', their eyebrows always rise.

I personally always like to putt out, I think its dangerous to get used to silly gimmies in bounce games and then you haven't got them in competition rounds, its a recipe for disaster, disaster I tell thee :smirk:

In Strokeplay qualifying comps there is no gimme -

During roll ups it's normally a putter handle - during the swindle it's everything holed out and in matchplay it will all depend on the situation

In match play I use to like giving gimmes then every so often, when they were not expecting it. Tell them no put this one out. Surprising how many times they missed it, as they thought you knew something about the putt that they didn't.

This, as standard 100% glimmer is a putter grip length, maybe 2 grips max if it's straight. It's amazing how asking someone to put from a distance you have given adds extra pleasure.... It's awesome.

If I think I could miss it, I make opponent putt. So about three inches.:)

I tend to be quite generous on the basis they may give me a similar length. I also like playing at a decent pace and can't stand hanging around over a straight two foot putt. On our last green I wouldn't give a putt over a foot though.

I give them early on from about a foot , but never on the 1st green as i be testing the guy out , miss and he putts out everything , it also depends on the putt , how often have you had a little putt in comps and its above the hole or on the side but you know with the slope there is a little break on the putt , do you bang it in , too firm and you miss on the high side and not firm enough and it breaks and you miss on the low side , those i make them wait then aaaaah ...go and have a look and walk away saying nothing , gamesmanship i know but the guy mind set is i was giving it to him but now he is not happy with me and he still has to putt out and goes on to miss , job done he is now not only mad at me but also himself , Had a guy once in a foursomes match say i should have given it to him , i replied it was not a gimme and he proved it by missing it , he got mad and we won easy after that ......................my mind set is i have to putt out everytime in matchplay and dont look for gimmes

In a pairs match quarters a couple months back, we were on the 15th green 1up I think.. they had a 3 and half footer for bogie we had a 5 footer for par, my pp said they could have theirs before he putted then knocked it 2 and half feet past.. looked over at them expecting the gimme and a half and they both looked the other way, then missed it lol.. major lesson learned there on the timing of gimmes...gotta love match play!!

Depends on which hole you are on. Early on and that's a concession all the time but around the turn I might just throw in a "can you just hole that please" and see if it rattles him a little. I don't have any hard and fast rules in matchplay.

I remember in a knockout, A/S on 18th green. Both had 3 footers, mine high and left to right, his low and straight.

Neither was given, I holed then he didnt! So glad I didn't concede his easy(ier) putt!

guess im more generous than most, in match play games i tend to concede anything upto 2 ft and sometimes longer, have no problem with being asked to hole anything as i hole out well. most of our matchplay stuff isnt overly serious so happy to concede in a lot of spots, did have one of our lady members ask if i was sure when i conceded one in a mixed match earlier in the year
