When i bought it I had never heard of it. When I did my round the world trip I passed a lot of omega. Shops. They hammered the Moon watch. What I thought was unique was eventually massively unique.

over 20 yrs ago a neighbours son was in the Royal Navy. His Bessie pal bought a watch/ Rolex from the Caribbean. It packed up a few months later.He sent it to Rolex in the UK.They sent it back with a great big hole drilled in the middle. Fake.

The original design has been around since 1957. It’s changed slightly over the years (bracelet tweaks etc) but is an iconic design. The big box version came out around 2014/15 but prior to this the watch was widely available in the previous version.

When I say “mass produced” I’m not saying it isn’t anything special as Rolex Submariners etc are mass produced and I’m on my second Speedmaster but it can be bought pretty easily in any Omega AD around the world and that’s been the case for as long as I can remember.
 
Omega do a brief case with all 23 of the 'missions' editions of the Speedmaster in it. They go for 100k plus when they come up for sale.
The missions edition have the space mission patch of each Apollo flight at the 9 o clock position on the dial.
They do a Snoopy version, a tin tin version, first Omega in space, first Omega on the moon, a new 321 version, etc.
That is without looking at all the automatic versions, the moon phase, triple date, date, and racing versions.

I have a triple date. But unless you are buying an original, or a Snoopy, these style of watches are far from rare.
 
My boss has a fake Rolex hulk, and a fake Panerai both bought in China. They are both extremely good copies, very hard to tell they are not real. They come with box, papers, and a receipt and credit card slip for the list price from a real boutique in Hong Kong airport.

He also has a genuine Omega Seamaster GMT.

I don't own an expensive watch but surely one of the reasons for getting one is that feeling of knowing it is special? If you buy a fake you don't get that buzz when you put it on, it is there for show only.

My FiL once bought a fake Rolex from a market in Spain. He was proudly showing it off when one of us pointed out he had bought a Ralex :LOL:. He did not see the funny side of that, even more so when it stopped working 6 months later.

Somebody I used to play golf with is a complete fraud/fake. Was a car salesman now he basically sources financing for people. He was flashing a Rolex DSSD about the clubhouse claiming it to be real and I lived 5 minutes away so quickly nipped home to grab mine. Quick comparison showed the flaws in his and he claimed he'd been 'ripped off'. (Crappy thing to do on my part but it needed doing it was relentless BS on a daily basis.

My Mrs Boss owns a prestige car sales business as well as his hotel and this same lad would often come in walk around the show room, jump in a car and take selfies of himself. Outted him on instagram when he took a photo of his rolex in his Porsche asking if he'd bought it and tagged the car sales business and it quickly got removed!

The mind baffles me but it's a bit of a sad scenario at the same time. Has like 20k followers and I doubt even .1% of that are people he knows it's all from social media bullshit. He's mid 20's a good looking lad to be fair but it's hard to peddle your BS at a local level at least when you live with your mum still.

To his abundance of followers it probably looks like he's doing real good but there must be something missing upstairs if you need to portray your life that way to strangers when everybody locally thinks your a complete mongtard.

I've unfollowed now, shame as he's a nice lad but seems to think he has something to prove which just alienates him. Needs to drop it and make some real life friends.
 
If I posted a pic on here, does anyone have enough knowledge to give me an idea on a Rolex. Got one from my granddad that just sits in a box. Needs an overhaul, strap mending etc but want to know if it is worth the expense to get it done (then may need advice on someone to do it.

Put a photo up I imagine someone may know something and if not, i'd be happy to share on the rolex forums if you so wished.

I always like to see an old hand me down, one thing I wish I had is a watch from my grandad with a few stories to go with it.
 
If you ever go to Turkey to play golf, the Sirene Belek hotel has an in-hotel shop which openly sells fake watches from all the major companies. They are remarkable and very good copies. I always smile to myself when at the airport on my way home and see the Chavs and Weegies sporting gold Submariners, Daytonas and the like.

Maybe I worded that wrong. What I should have said was, "On my wages I would never buy a luxury watch as I could utilise the money on something else that was more important." However, when I win the euros tomorrow you'll find me in Barbados at the best watch shop I can find : )
Some of the Grand Seikos are nice, but out of my price range too.

Part of me thinks the problem is buying fakes especially at a price when you can buy a nice watch anyway, is that it is feeding and fueling a fake industry.
 
All this is fed by people wanting a brand. People will pay for a name. It's the same reason that you see fake golf clubs being sold. Everybody wants a bargain but want something flash on their wrist. When I was on holiday in Turkey there were so many people wearing fake Rolex's that I left wondering if I saw somebody wearing one in the UK I'd actually wonder if it was real. Saying that I bought a fake Breitling in Turkey and on my return was offered £100 for it as a woman wanted it for her husband. I declined as I quite like the style of the watch. Ten years on and it's still going strong. Battery not automatic but otherwise looks good enough from a distance.
My Father in Law has an Omega Seamaster and after seeing an article in a newspaper was convinced it was worth tens of thousands of pounds. In the end to keep him quiet we had to have it valued and it came back at circa £3K. At least it shut him up.
