1st round of the club championship this morning, if I'm honest, it's come a little too soon after my lesson on Monday to tackle my hook problem.

Couldn't have got off to a worse start, big hook off 1 but got lucky an hit a tree and stayed in play, in deep rough but in play. I wasn't so lucky on 4,7 & 8 racking up some big numbers but hit some great drives on 3,5 & 9 so that was something.

Ended up shooting 51 on the front, 2 trebles & a quadruple soon adds up :o

The back 9 was much better, only 1 hook on 15 which led to another treble but also made 6 pars, a bogie and a birdie coming home in 38 so some encouragement there.

It's gonna take a lot more work but there's light at the end of the tunnel and breaking 90 after 51 on the front 9 was pretty pleasing.

Round 2 tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to report something positive.

try not to think about the hooks mate, I dont know if you do all the mental side, but 1 thing that helps me is remembering the best shots I have hit on each tee box I get on. I am sure that after a good back 9 you will be able to go and play well for r2! good luck

Thankfully my problems at the moment are inconsistancy. So I don't know what is coming up next, fat, hook or cut.

Lesson tomorrow, followed by muchos plenty practice. I'm determined not to let the good work over the winter and start of the season go to waste.

All the best with your next round, maybe it will all click and you'll have a good one.

Struggled with my swing at the range today so not overly hopeful of helping Pedro too much in our match. Hopefully he'll do what he normally does on a new course and rock up and rack up 36 points. It the club championship at the course we're playing tomorrow (Maidenhead) and so the greens will be like glass. Got a lesson there in the morning (just a short game refresher) so going to get some practice in on the putting green and hope that even if it takes me a few to get there my short game and putting can give Hywel a run at the hole everytime

I'm worried about this. It's keeping me awake at night. (well, not really)

Surely there's a reason for this problem....can't it be fixed?

You must be generating so much hook spin or your grip must be dubious or something.

Do you know why?

This reply seems harsh, but I don't like to see someone suffer for too long.

Thanks for the concern RGDave :)

I know the reason and I'm working on it with my pro. It is caused by me dropping the club behind me when I start the downswing, the result is a push or a hook when I try to compensate with my wrists.

It was originally picked up in my 1st lesson but we thought it was purely because I was straightening my right leg on my backswing and getting stuck (one of many things I have been fixing this year).

However, now my backswing is better it seems I'm still dropping the club inside the line to start my downswing which is forcing me to over compensate with my wrists.

Like all thngs in golf, it's just gonna take some time

Good luck with it. I can imagine what's going on, sadly as I have no experience with it I can't even recommend a drill.

I think it will sort itself, especially if you are working on your backswing. Good backswing = less to manipulate on the way down.

Does anyone know if you can do the 3 ball or bob's sponge drills "in reverse"?

I've developed an exaggerated draw (hook) with my long irons and it's even crept into my woods. The pro diagnosed me instantly (yesterday). For some reason I have began to hinge a little early in my backswing which has somehow resulted in the clubface being closed at the moment of truth. Anyway it seems to be a load better now. He gave me a drill where I slow down the backswing an only go back just under half way, freeze and check the angle of clubhead. Repeat this 2 or 3 times before striking the ball. I hit 60 in this fashion on the range and all was well. Went onto the course today and was pleased with my ball flight, distance and consistency. However there is a small chance this is coincidence and a stroke of good fortune.
