Given that there is no gym or anying happening over the next few months. Hoping to get some exercise - esp cardio. So thinking of getting 1 piece of kit. Some of these are very expensive, so looking to make a safe investment. Space not the biggest challenge, as i could put it in the garage.

Thinking of going for elliptical trainer rather than peloton... my PT had told me that its better to do a full body workout rather than just one form e.g. spinning.... any thoughts/suggestions....

Had a look at this one.. https://www.realhomes.com/buying-guides/best-cross-trainers and https://www.t3.com/features/best-elliptical

Gyms are open, where are you reading they are not?

me not going ?

Similar, ours you have to book exact slots to go (rather than go ad hoc when you want) and they want money each time you go which adds up pro rata to more than the old monthly subs. They also dont have the pool or steam room open so overall not bothering. Plus with covid on the rise again and thinking I've had it but not 100% and unknowing about antibodies/re-infection/resistance etc doesn't quite seem worth the risk. Aerosol spread is the worst vector, worse than touch apparently so people huffing and puffing exhaling hard whilst doing weights can't be good in that regard.

edit: re the elliptical trainer I got a decent used one about a year ago but failed to realise just how big a footprint they have, unless you have a lot of room in a garage or large spare room think twice. Ours got sold on quick.

I can also vouch for the simple skipping rope. Helped me lose 2 stone during lockdown. Nice and cheap and certainly get the heart rate up of used for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a week

Ski erg or rowing machine.... But depends on your budget.

Amen! You want to lose fat? Learn how to skip. best bang for buck weight loss by a mile!! (yes running is free, but decent trainers are not!)

EDIT: CAVEAT - You fill your face with the wrong stuff, you will not lose weight. Fundamentally weight loss is done in the kitchen and helped along with sweating.

I'm doing a series of KB workouts nice and easy and 1 piece of equipment (24kg kettlebell.)

20 kb swings
1 goblet squat
19 kb swings
2 goblet squats
18 kb swings
3 goblet squats
17 kb swings
4 goblet squats

and so on until your doing 1 KB swing then 20 goblet squats.

Rest when you need it and try and beat your last time.

as this is going to be inside the house, cant do weights. While i can lifts, the Mrs - who has a bad back - cant do it. Hence it rules out a rowing machine, atleast till she can get some core strenghting excercises

I work on keeping my muscle mass which I think is important as we age, so do two routines a day using resistance bands and dumbbells. I also do a four mile power walk on days when I don't play golf.

Reviving this one.. Nearly agreed on getting a elliptical for the house (https://www.nordictrack.co.uk/ellipticals/nordictrack-commercial-149-elliptical).. The idea is to keep motivated and keep working on it.
I have used an elliptical at the gym and it works for me - esp since I cant run due to plantar fasciitis. also rather than a bike, its good for upper body workout

The machine will be used by the Mrs too. Mrs has a challenge around her back. One of the things her physio would say is around strengthening her core.

One of my friends mentioned that ellipticals are no good for folks with bad back. I have never heard of it before and google does not seem to be conclusive. I had asked her to get a PT for some sessions, but she hasnt managed to do it..

So a question for anyone in the trade or good experience in this sort of things.. is it true that ellipticals are not good for back

Go to a decent running shop, spend some time and some wedge on some trainers that are right for you, not sports direct. Massage and exercise and then go running. Bar the trainers etc, it's free. PF is 99% down to having the wrong trainers.
