Holiday in Scotland.

The English are coming!!!

Me and Mrs Basher are considering a jaunt north of the border in June for a week.

Looking for recommendations from the natives or anyone else who has holidayed there please.

Thinking about nice scenery, castles, lochs, nice walks and the like with a few decent pubs for the old evening gargle.

No golf unfortunately (what a waste!)

Would I be looking at the Highlands? I have heard the west side of the country is quite nice and biscuit tin lid like!

You could head for Inverness and take the Whisky Trail up through granton on Spey(turn right at Aviemore) and then onto Inverness. There you can stop in the Ramada Jarvis and SHMBO can have a Spa whilst you wonder to Inverness Golf Centre and AG (across the road from IGC) You could then meander down Loch Ness through Drumnadrochit and on to Fort William, then if you are still fresh, Oban (1hr drive) Oban is incredible and you can hop on a little ferry and explaore the islands for a few shillings. Its a wonderful part of the country at that time of year even though it will be Midgie season.

Basher, if you can manage that you will have a lovely trip, i would add , if you are driving follow the road down further from oban in the direction of Glasgow and you will stumble on my favourite part of the country , loch lomond

Been to Scotland multi several occassions and always been 'lucky' with the weather/midges... We tend to visit in last couple of weeks in June for the extra long days... As herself is an accomplished photographer and light is better then for what she wants... Be aware Scottish schools start their summer hols earlier than in England so if you leave your visit to July all the towns are busier... If doing the west coast as well has already been mentioned may I also reccommend Largs for a visit plus the drive on the coast road up to Mallaig is a must do...

We always use B&B and have found Scottish landladies very welcoming and generous with breakfast portions!

I would recommend heading up past Glasgow, towards Loch Lomond. A quick stop in Luss for the best Tea/Coffee shop in the UK. Head north via Tyndrum through to Fort William (one of the best drives in Scotland). Take a trip to the Highland wildlife park. When you do head south, take the A9 down through Pitlochry then turn west alongside Loch Tay towards Killin and Crianlarich... I used to take that route regularly when we had a place in Inverbeg and you'll struggle to find a better drive..

isle of skye is worth visiting,with eilean donan castle on the way and once again beautiful scenery and excellent roads.

Isle of Arran is worth a trip. Stunning scenery, lots of nice country pubs and the locals are very friendly.

The west coast is the better route if travelling by car.

You MUST, repeat MUST stop for a day or 2 at Plockton, it felt like brigadoon when I first went there, single track road over a hill past Highland cows to a beautiful wee village stunning views great pub and B&B's, theres actually quite a lot of English artists stay there full time, Hamish MaCbeth was filmed there also. http://www.plockton.com/

+1 for that - the drive up crianlarich/tyndrum/bridge of orchy/rannoch moor/glencoe can't be beaten. glencoe is the most amazing atmospheric place and always different depending on weather. Lots of great hillwalking there too if that's your thing.

I would recommend the Gairloch area, fabulous scenery and the drive up to Ullapool from there past An Teallach is superb.
The Badachro Inn is a brilliant seaside eatery with lobster etc pretty cheap. The Old Inn alongteh road at Gairloch itself is really good pub and restaurant. Good beaches, mountains etc etc. The drive there especially down past Loch Maree is out of this world.

Gairloch has a lovely little 9 hole course with a superb par 5 that bends around the bay. The fairway gets narrower and at 150 yards stops and goes has a steep face of rough. The green is set down in a dip and the wind was against when I played. This hole would not be out of place on any top notch course.
