So here is another thing I am not sure about.

In a competition, do you have to play the holes in order? Now I know the pro's tend to have half the field start on hole 1 and half the field on hole 10. How ever if for example the course plan allows it that you can move in between holes so say start on hole 1 do 2 then 3 but then you realise its a big hold up on 4 so you skip across and do 7 8 9 because its open, is this allowed or do you have to play holes in order?

Rule 2 - Match Play and Rule 3 - Stroke Play both require play to be over a "stipulated round".

A stipulated round is defined as

"The "stipulated round" consists of playing the holes of the course in their correct sequence, unless otherwise authorised by the Committee. The number of holes in a stipulated round is 18 unless a smaller number is authorised by the Committee. As to extension of stipulated round in match play, see Rule 2-3."

The practice of having half the field starting at the 1st and the other half at the 10th is not confined to professional tournaments. Where this is done, it is obviously authorised by the Committee and so the stipulated round is 1-18 for one set of players and 9-18,1-9 for the other.

The requirement to play the stipulated round applies to match play as well.
