A bit odd. The normal liner is 25mm below the surface and less that 1mm thick. A ball is 42 mm diam. The ball was more then 50% into the hole. And it bounced upwards off a 1mm 'shelf'?I have had a ball bounce back out after hitting the lip of a hole liner, but that was sunken the normal 20 mm or so.
How does that tally with the R&A/USGA caveat 'unless the nature of the soil makes it impracticable to do so' ?Will let you know as putting them in this week to hopefully alleviate hole damage when folks try flicking ball out with the flag 😢
Only fun comps through the Winter period due to greatly fore shortened course , something I'd like to change but other works will have priority after this wet autumn. How does that tally with the R&A/USGA caveat 'unless the nature of the soil makes it impracticable to do so' ?
Don't ask me how, but yes it bounced back out. I think I must have upset someone or something before itA bit odd. The normal liner is 25mm below the surface and less that 1mm thick. A ball is 42 mm diam. The ball was more then 50% into the hole. And it bounced upwards off a 1mm 'shelf'?
We tried this and the ball brought the liner out on some holes. Will let you know as putting them in this week to hopefully alleviate hole damage when folks try flicking ball out with the flag 😢
How was the ball being extricated? We tried this and the ball brought the liner out on some holes.
Our GK was not amused .
Yes this .Sounds like the players were lifting the ball out with the flagstick (flicking ball out with the flag).
Yes, Just been talking to out GK about the condition of the course and he commented on the way the continuous rain has badly softened the greens surfaceBut maybe the weather has had a influence in this.
We had a discussion in the clubhouse last week.Yes, Just been talking to out GK about the condition of the course and he commented on the way the continuous rain has badly softened the greens surface
Yes this .
OurHead Greenkeeper is not happy with the new rule.
And he has every right to be ,lazy members and visitors are damaging the hole doing this.
I can see your point - but one can't really deny that the problem is an unintended consequence of the rule change. Previously, (for the most part) the ball & the flag weren't in the hole at the same time, so the lazy & the inconsiderate weren't given the opportunity to be gits.So with greens softer & wetter than you’ve ever seen and due to players flicking the ball out when removing flag... it’s the rule that your GK is unhappy with
Strange, I’d’ve thought it would be the players vandalising the course he would be upset with. Nowhere in the rule does it instruct players to extract their ball by pulling the flag out to flick the ball up & out

But until the rule change the ball and flag were never in together unless you chipped in.So with greens softer & wetter than you’ve ever seen and due to players flicking the ball out when removing flag... it’s the rule that your GK is unhappy with

It’s an unintended consequence of a rule change as some golfers don’t care as long as they are ok.
The GK s job has been made harder by these lazy idiots .
As he has to change the holes more often due to damage.
I think most of them don’t really realise they are damaging the hole.Yeah I get what you're saying. Just seems a little bit like the only thing keeping these idiots from doing more damage is the rules
Almost as if their default is to cause damage unless something stops them
