Hobbits's leaving the Shire

Yorkshire that is. It's official, we're closing up the burrow in Hobbiton, and succumbing to the lure of the gold of Mordor(Scotland). Currently house hunting in Aberdeen, and all being well we will invade early Jan.

Hobbits needs a new home. On the list are the following in order of preference;

1. Newburgh.
2. Ellon.
3. Murcar.
4. Oldmeldrum.
5. Inverurie.
6. Kintore.
7. Kemnay.

Nothing to the southwest as we're looking north and west.

• Cost for the above aren't an issue - I've left out a couple that are silly money, e.g. £170 a month.
• Good greens in winter a must.
• A good craic is essential.
• A decent social scene.

I'll try and grab the odd game through Jan and Feb but the new job will limit that, so I need some firm suggestions from those that have either played there a lot or are members at one of the above.

Be sure to have a beer at The Prancing Pony when you finally set off. And keep an eye out for odd looking big geezers in black cloaks who hiss a lot and schlep about on jet black horses.

Depends on where we finally end up living. If we're up the coast its a might be. But if I'm coughing that much up I'd be more inclined to choose Murcar.

Kemnay is a lovely course but you won't get much winter golf there and that probably goes equally for Inverurie, Kintore and Oldmeldrum too. Same neck of the woods.

Of the ones on the list, I'd go for Murcar. No idea what kind of club it is but it's a smashing course.

Ive only ever played some of these in summer and so no idea what the winter would hold, but would guess like most parkland course will get wet.

So would go links.Cruden, Murcar and RA would be my choices. Newbrough has a great back 9 but the new holes were a bit Mehh. Plus it was wet last time i played, but that was the tidal river and loch next to the course i would guess.

One of the guys in my group was a member at Ellon for 25 years and said its a good course but a swap if its wet.

Hope you enjoy the new surroundings it's a great area to play golf in and generally very friendly as well.
If you want winter golf your going to have to stick to links, the other courses are nice but get boggy in winter. Out of the Northern links courses you mention I'd pick Murcar, if you get a nice crisp winters day up there it's really nice, if it's blowing a hooly as they say wrap up warm and club up! Cruden bay is a cracker but you'd have a 40 min commute to it from Aberdeen.
Oh and it's got a proper football team, just across the road from it is Kings links which is ok for a quick knock in winter, usually holds up pretty well (it's a muncipal).
