OK....... well I have only started playing golf again for the first time in 10 years (23 now) ...... currently shooting about 15-18 over per round .... anyway im using my fathers old clubs and have been looking forward to buying myself new shineys for a while..... however his irons are swilken alta plus tour irons and recently I have been hitting these things so sweet, changed my swing a lot and im crushing the back of the ball producing a perfect ball flight and feel confident with any of the irons....Also they have a tiny thin head with lots of grooves producing a good hop and stop on greens...... been to AG and every club I pick up has a big fat head and just feels disgusting in my hands....

there pretty old and have some tiny rust spots in the shafts but im now wondering if I should have em refurbed and fitted for me....... Im driving with big bertha warhead which im not overly confident with and im only driving about 240-250 so I think that perhaps a newer driver with some newer technology could help me hit the ball a good bit further and straighter off the tee.... Im hitting a 6 iron about 165-170 so I feel I should be longer off the tee.....

so.... Will a new driver give me the 20-30 yards I want?
Do I hunt around for new irons with small thin heads like the ones I have just now ?
Should I get the clubs re-furbed (anyone know how much thatll skin me?)

Seems like a bit of a lengthy rant but im excited about how well im hitting the ball with these and the results im getting, they could be a bit straighter but being punished for a bad swing doesnt really bother me ..... =]

It all depends on what clubs that you've tried in AG that'll give you the difference there are a lot of thin lined clubs, Titleist AP2 712, Callaway RAZR X-Forged, and plenty of bladed clubs but it's your price range that will decide what you can go after. A new driver will really make a difference in my opinion though, it's just about finding out whichgoes best. Although I can't reccomend the RBZ enough, fantastic club!!

Good luck with whatever you go for!

You've answered your own question Pal.....If your hitting it well with what you have keep them....If they are showing signs of rust but are otherwise ok just get the shafts swapped out for the same again but new.....
And you get to keep the sentimental value of them also......

A new driver may give you a bit more yardage and probably more confidence over the ball but if you are getting that distance out of a BB its nothing to be embarrassed about....Thats plenty long for most courses.

Could be worth refreshing the grips to fit you and also check the loft and lie? This could be the best advice if you are unsure about changing and especially as you are hitting them well.

One thing that will have changed is shaft technology and the balance and the weighting. There are loads of blades out there if you want to go down that road but personally, I'd trade a marginally thinner top line and go for a small cavity back. As most of the pros are using a "players cavity" to give them some forgiveness then it seems to make sense. If you are off 15 for argument sake then I'd still be looking for even more help for those days when the strike isn't as pure as it has been of late but again thats just my view. IF you want a club that may tick a lot of your boxes have a look at the Cleveland CG16 tour

None of these! What you need is to book a series of lessons, build up a rapport with a teaching pro. When you are hitting a ball well is the best time to seek regular coaching. Get a 5 or 7 lesson series, as much as you can afford (what a new driver and irons would cost maybe).

Get a good regular swing going, ask the pro is the clubs are OK. He will advise well if you build a good releationship!

Then buy from him later on, he will know your swing so can recommend as well as probably do you a good deal as you are a regular.

I don't believe it's worth getting the irons refurb-ed. If you are hitting them great, don't change them.

Driver distance does seem a little short compared to iron distance. I hit same Driver distance but 6 iron is 150. I believe you should be getting 265 at least. A more recent, though not necessarily this year's model Driver should give you this - I don't believe length has increased in the last year or so - if you select one with somewhere near the correct shaft. I believe an FT9 or X460 with a Stiff shaft would be a pretty good fit and either could be had for about £50 through Ebay!

Of course, if you do consider lessons, getting a Pro involved could well be a good step too.

And I believe Mizuno make some of the best 'near blades' around. Plenty of feel, forgiving enough to use all year round and quite 'pretty' as well!

hitting irons brilliantly= dont change
your dads old irons, sentimental= definitley dont change

hav your pro look at them and maybe get some maintenance on them
