Technique, experience and skill play a far bigger role in getting a shot like this... and some luck too :D

Absolutely, however you do not get quality close up pics of a plane 50 meters away with a point and click or an iphone...

Nothing difficult about getting the shot other than being in that place, plane is flying pretty much in a straight line - Even most of the cheapest SLR's would be capable and you can buy a second hand 70-300mm lens on ebay for £50, the rest is experience and practice (which you could do by standing near a road and photographing cars - easier to do with a pro camera and a quick lens though.

It's a nice pic though

Just a wee pet hate of mine...

Would you say Cat 1 golfers must have serious kit or that Jamie Oliver must have a serious oven to cook well, does Dan Brown need a serious word processor

but to get a fast and sharp pic you need good glass- that's a given.

A good tog can take excellent pics with an iPhone3 but to get zoom, no blur, sharp etc etc you need kit....as well as technique

YouTube the mach loop, they fly below you. A couple of my mates who are typhoon pilots fly through it a couple of times a week. Looks cracking but its miles from anywhere to get to.

another perspective..............inside the cockpit:eek:

Most manufactures make glass perfectly capable of this kind of pic without it being anywhere near serious kit

The best kit in the world cant help a hobbyist to grab shots like this where they lack the technique. A poor photographer is just the same as a poor golfer, doesn't matter whats in their hands

No big issue for me it was just a pet peeve that this pic doesn't require anything like serious kit and detracts from any technique of the person who took it

Like I said you can get a canon zoom that will go to 300mm for about £50 second hand - any canon SLR (nikon too) will take a decent pic - easier if you have a 4 grand camera and 12 grand lens but you'll still miss some shots, everyone does, but you'll get some good shots too if you know what you are looking for - it's technique and experience not art or high end equipment.

My one and only Munro was Ben More on Mull.
Just coming off the summit I spotted a Harrier Jet coming straight at me, passed a couple of hundred feet wide and below me.

My own personal fly past.

Guy took pics with a Canon 7d (cost £699 at the moment - I've got one, it's not a top end camera, more semi-pro) - he did use a good lens (300mm f2.8 - cost £4899 image quality would have been just as good with the f4 version which costs £1079 - optics are superb on both) - he's a serious aircraft photographer - here's his flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/58430191@N04/with/15395200426/

Not like the Daily Mail to make up a story - glad they didn't with the pic of mine they published last Monday.
