Not sure how but I have managed to catch the yips. I have recently been putting well but in the last 3 rounds I have missed more short putts than you can wave a stick at.
I am right handed and when I put I seem to miss most of them left. I am confident I have my eye over the ball - good wide stance solid stroke so where is it going wrong please ?
should I move the ball forward of centre or back ?

If your missing consistantly left it could be a few things.

- Your alignment, get on the putting green with some alignment sticks or a v-easy to make sure your pointing the right way.

- You may be 'looking up' or looking at the hole mid stroke. Even though you may think your not just try keeping your head still until the ball drops into the hole. Which hopefully it will do!

- You have developed a wristy putting action. a v-easy would help here too.

I'd get it on video from a few angles so you can see whats happening.

Best of luck

Try getting a 2thumb putter grip, £20 fitted at AG. Takes all the hand action out of the putter swing.

The good news is you don't have the Yips.
I'd love you to buy a V-Easy :D but I think the problem lies in your lower body, not your wrists.
DO NOT move your hips while putting.
Get a loved one to stand behind you and hold your hips still while you putt. I think you'll find this is causing you to miss everything left.
Good luck :D

I am a sufferer, in a BIG way!

I know it is in my head - why? - because on the practise green I hole putts for fun, no pressure.

During the game I need to hole out for???? and this puts the pressure on - tension creeps in and the ball does not want to drop!

I have found in the last wee while that Bob's magical 'Y' has helped but I find that my left hip(forward one) restricts my follow through somehow and this results in my club head turning left. I now pull my left foot back slightly to allow an unrestricted follow through to the hole and this 'feels' better but real results have still to show.

Bob, if I am static when putting, as you suggest, hinging from the shoulders like a pendulum, once contact with the ball is made surely the follow through must go up in the air and not towards the hole along the ground?

Thats how it will feel.
In reality, it will swing to the inside eventually but will stay online longer giving you a better chance of hitting it straight.

Wolfy, I used to miss on the left 9 times out of 10. Although I won't go into details about my new-found grip/stroke/putter etc, what I will say is this;

My pro discovered I was reading my putts left. Not just some, but ALL. I would set up, put a good stroke on it and then either hit it spot on (and miss left) or leave the face open and hole it. It was absolutely predictable.

He insisted I went home and drew a black line along all the balls in my bag that are ready-to-play balls.

Now I put the ball down lining up the black line dead at the hole (or left or right if I know the ball is going to move). Even though I've been doing this for months now, I still feel as if I'm aiming right.... :)

I line up the putter head "to" the black line and hit it. NO worry about stroke, NO "steering" of the ball through the stroke, just hit it the best I can along the black line I can see on the ball.

Try it. You don't need to have a perfect stroke or textbook style to hit a ball along a line consistently.....anyone can do it (if I can :p)

RGDave, I read something recently about people putting lines on their golfballs and then not actually being able to line the ball up properly to the hole even though they drew a line. Also the line has to be lined up according to your eyeline. So it would be on top of the ball if your eyes are right over the ball and on the nearside if your eyes are slightly back..... or something like that.

I think drawing a line on the ball adds an extra complication. Yes, I know a lot of people do it but it's just as easy to hole putts without, in my opinion.

Came good on Saturday!

Took 10 shots off my putting for the round against my norm but the rest of my game was off a bit - is this not the way with the golfing Gods!

However, high hopes that I can now start moving my handicap down a bit as the season unfolds now that I have a better 'feel' with this new system.

I'm glad it's helping. As your confidence grows so will the amount of putts holed
Happy putting :)
