Hi southern blokes,

As you know some of the great northern barons are coming down for this meet in our longboats (ok, in nissan sunbeams and datsun cherrys).

We obviously don't know which are the rated courses in your neck of the woods, but if some of you are at a loose end, and are perusing golf empire. If you can recommend some opens on the preceding Sunday or the day afterwards on the Tuesday, it would be most appreciated.

Within 30 miles of fleet would be considered, or anywhere from Oxford downwards near the M40/M1 corridors.

Glad of any help/recommendations.

P.S. We aren't old enough for seniors comps yet, but team, pairs and singles would be great.

Quick scan through Golf Empire says your options are pretty limited. Shame you're not seniors, they have an open at Collingtree that prob would have fitted the bill.

The only 1 that I can see that fits your criteria, is a team open at Drayton Park (nr Abingdon in Oxfordshire, M40 then head south of Oxford on the A34, afterwards, you could easily cut down the A34 to the M4 and across to Fleet)

Been a long while since I played there so you may do best to see if others would recommend (but from when i last did i wouldnt rush to recommend). Quite a young course and quite short (6000ish yds, think there were lots of par 3s), was pleasant enough but certainly wouldnt make any must play lists.

Think you may be better seeing if you can get 1 or 2 guys from here to host you rather than going the opens route

There is a Forum meet arranged for the Tuesday at Tidworth. There will also be games arranged on the Sunday, including my club, with priority given to those travelling long distance. Just to early to make any firm bookings at the moment but watch out for new threads.

Not sure you will find any Open events played on a Sunday (At least on a decent course)

Most popular day for opens isnt it?

Surely at most clubs that is a members day ? At my place you can only play with a member on a Sunday. Not an expert on Open's, but just don't think top clubs would have them at the weekend. May be wrong but the few I have played in have been weekdays.

Its funny cos Id rather play in Opens midweek yet nearly everyone I want to play this year seems to be on a Sunday. May just be those local to here but a lot of them are Sunday pms when I guess a lot of courses are pretty quiet (after a busy morning)

Had a quick look on golf empire, and can't see any Opens in Surrey or Hampshire on Sunday 28th September. It is quite late in the season though which might explain. Much better to join the Southern Forumers for rounds at local courses at guest rates.

Drayton is local to me, it's an ok course and actually pretty tough. Will have a look about for you chaps though..

Not sure many members courses around here would hold an Open at weekends. I'm sure if Richart's course gets over booked (and its well worth playing so get there if you can) others will be able to get others on somewhere

I will certainly be up for a round on the Sunday

Until 2 months ago I was a member at Drayton, I think it's worth a round. Not especially long (5300/5700/6100 off red/yellow/white) but pretty tight, a lot of water, and they normally keep the greens in good condition. There are a few holes as well with very intimidating tee shots if you're playing off the whites (for those that know the course, I'm thinking of 4, 13, 15 especially). I really like the course, my reasons for changing clubs had nothing to do with either the course or its condition.

ME and Kraxx are heading down on Saturday, to make a long weekend of it, as f yet not sure if it will be an early sart to get down in time for a round mid afternoon, or whether we'll play the 'Victory Cup' at our club on Saturday Morning (very early tee time) before coming down.

For the Sunday we'll be up for a game, hopefully somewhere with a visitor friendly club house so we can watch the end of the Ryder Cup.

I quite fancy the idea of going richart's Blackmoor bash before the curry, however I know richart allocates the places for those who are furthest away first (and rightly so). If we have got enough spaces I'd like to join the party, but if Blackmoor is full and more spaces are needed then subject to football fixtures & domestic commitments I may be able to sign 3 in on Saturday and/or Sunday at mine. Saturday may be a bit tricky as it is the annual England v Celts match, but hopefully we can sort something out. Khamelion, if you & Kraxx fancy mine for Saturday afternoon let me know & I'll ask the pro what time we could get on. Sunday should hopefully be fine as there is nothing in the diary. Let's hope the football fixtures are kind.

Hi chaps, thanks for checking what was available out there anyway.

We were probably too optimistic in hoping that a top 100 course might of had an open on, or even a top 100-200 course.

With travelling so far we are hoping to get a premier course in, even if we have to pay a good price for it. Some of us may have a reciprocal to tie in with, also.

However, if someone can get about 8 of us in at a good place, that would be great. Or we could even split up into a few 3's for 2-3 different courses.

Again thanks for checking, we may just see what midweek deals become available, or see if there are nice invites.
