Heat break at Wimbledon for women

Wouldn't expect anything less from an outdated event and sport am afraid.

Yes, an event so outdated that it has a global TV audience and prize money that both dwarf those of The Open.

I am no fan of tennis but your comment is typically daft.

So does Downton Abbey but I expect we're all quite happy living with electricity.

Andy Murray aside, this country has vastly under performed in producing top level players. If Mr Murray had got his wish and Scotland voted to leave the UK, our record would be shocking.

If tennis is to survive in this country then changes need to be made.

Smaller ones such as sorting out the inequality would help. We've got even prize money, now let's have women playing 5 sets to differentiate the majors from any other week on tour. And do away with the ridiculous heat break rule. A human is a human, whatever gender.

On a bigger level I think tennis clubs need a shake up. Very difficult to find a court to pay and play on, and the atmosphere at tennis clubs can be even stuffier than golf clubs. Get more adults and youngsters playing the game and enjoying it, not worrying about if they're wearing the right clothes/doing the right thing.

I'm looking forward to 2:30 today and seeing Laura Robson take to the court

My experience does not reflect this. The rackets club I am a member of has 19 tennis courts and you can always get on to play at any time really. It isn't stuffy at all and there are hundreds of juniors. There is no dress code for tennis either apart from using court shoes which is perfectly reasonable. It certainly doesn't require a huge shake-up!

It costs £32 a month to be a member and there are no court fees although you do have to pay for lights if you play at night. And the cost for kids is less than half of that. Not exactly cost prohibitive and you can play as much as you like.

That said, I do think there are issues with professional tennis. Dare I say the speed of the game?! 20 seconds is the maximum time allowed between points in a game but Nadal always takes longer and never gets pulled up.

Another issue is the constant towel wiping - what is that all about? How to be a modern tennis pro? Wipe all your sweat into a towel after every point and then throw it at a child when you are done. Sullenly point at the same child after the next point to communicate your demand to have it brought to you by them. Pathetic really.

No towels on a squash court and they are like chalk and cheese in terms of effort required to play to a decent standard.

.

Re Nadal: the British guy, Liam Broady, when he was pinged for swearing shouted to the umpire about how the same treatment isn't dished out to those on centre court.

The towels thing is a proper throwback. But, remember, its tough being a pampered pro when you only get a 90 second (which is always longer once the players take another few moments to get off their chair) break after every other game, towels to wipe your face after every point, chilled drinks and fruit on hand and a nice parasol to sit under. (Not sure if they have these at Wimbledon though)

Good to hear that you have had a positive experience, I sadly can't say the same! Just being able to find a court for a knock around with a friend proves impossible if you don't want a monthly commitment, many of us have now gone to other sports. Perhaps it's the area.

Agree about the towel issue - it really is pathetic that adults (often wearing sweatbands) have kids shuttle them a towel every point.

I'd also do away with line judges where hawk-eye is available.

I dont see any issue, it's voluntary (by one) and only after the second set and only if the mean is above 30.3 celcius.
It should be there for the men as well or for neither but I do applaud it for the juniors.

Squash players tend to slap their sweat on the walls (disgusting behaviour) and can cover the whole court in 2 steps from the T.

I do agree the constant towelling should be curbed.

on a point to note I'm in Dublin today on business and its cloudy with some rain spots this morning. what heatwave?

Cant wait to get back to London especially as I have 2 centre court tickets for this Friday:whoo:

Sexism in a major sporting event in the UK? Surely not.

Not surprising tbf. After all they get more prize money.....erm, pro rata? than the men do, do they not?

An absolute scandal. I for one hope to see this reported in all mainstream media and I am looking forward to hearing the opinions of high ranking MPs ......and even wee kiddy on MSPs.
Surely they will condemn this blatant inequality?

I for one do not believe Wimbledon should be held at...erm, well....Wimbledon, until they get their house in order and treat men as equals.

Shame on them and a pox on their house!

Pretty good where I play. Juniors play a pittance of a joining fee and there are loads of them. We have a pro who teaches too!!!! They can wear what they like to play in. There is a serious lack of 25yo-45yo members though !!!
