Haver Castle

Long time since I played it, but was one of my favourites in the area.

Certainly not gimmicky.

Lovely views too!

Nice one. I just think back to how disappointed I was with Leeds Castle golf course when I first went there after being told how great it was. I wondered if it would be in the same vein. There web site certainly look the business. It a freebie round tomorrw to so hopefully I make the most of it and play well.

Leeds Castle is that a full 18 course. Whnever I've driven past there always assumed it was a Par 3, 9 hole course.

Be interested to hear what Hever Castle is like though, not overly far from myself and looking to arrange a day out with my regular group next month.

Never been here before but am going tomorrow. Whats it like, good course or gimicky?

I take it we are talking about Hever Castle Golf Course?

It's not gimicky, but everything else is of course down to what you like in a course. The greens are currently being watered and are holding, whilst the fairways are providing some roll (at last). Grass is still growing faster than can be mown but the groundstaff are on top of it IMO. Greens yesterday were as good as they have ever been.

There is a significant difference in how the course plays off the white and yellow tees at the moment - way beyond the difference in SSS. If you are strong golfers play from the whites.

Always interested in opinions when you have played!

Fader - Leeds Castle is a 9 hole course, about par 32 ish, no par 5's and I can't remeber if it was 3 or 4 par 3's. Is usually in good condition but not a proper course. I discovered this only after playing it a few years back. Much better courses in the area IMO.

Duncan - I only know two of the 4 playing but I'm happy to play of the whites, I'm 16 hcp. i'm looking forward to this lots now :)

....but I'm happy to play of the whites, I'm 16 hcp.....

Assuming that you are playing the Kings and Queens combination ....

Mid teens h/cap? Don't know the course? You will enjoy the course a lot more playing off the yellows (imho). It's tough enough off those. A lot of the greens are slightly elevated above the fairway so make sure of your clubbing into them.

Don't
underclub the par 3's. If you think that you can reach with the club in hand, put it back in the bag and take at least 1 club longer (maybe not the 6th though).

11th to 17th holes - one of the toughest series of holes around. Play those in level net par and you will have done well.

Well just back from Hever Castle....what a lovely place. Very beautiful and a very nice course. We were lucky it stayed dry until the 17th green too.

So how did my day go?

Pretty good actually. I won our friendly four ball match with 35 points of 16hcp. Other two got 34 playing of 16 and 14 and last bloke got 30 of 28hcp.

After the front nine, me and the other 16 hcp had 22 points each and the 14hcp had 18 points. I had shot 40 and had two birdies in a row on holes 2 and 3 both with massive putts!!

The back nine was tough and I ended up shooting 49 so more or less played to my hcp.

The course itself was very nice, great practice facilities right next to the 1st tee. and what well kept 1st tee too. I loved hole 2 and 3 obviously due to the birdies. Then on the front holes 5 and 6 were nice, the 5th tee shot needed to be placed to get the right distance over the stream and the next par 3 is always a fun hole with a closest the pin up for grabs. The par 5 was good too, tempting to try and get there in two. I nearly made it coming up short by about 80 yards.

On the back 9, 10th par 5 again tempting to go for it in two but a sliced my 3 wood from the deck. The next holes 11, 12 and 13th all very good holes. I was pleased to come away with 4 and 3 on 11th /12th, but then had a 6 on 13th which was a lovely hole. I put my 1st drive in the trees on the right hand side, then driver for 3 off the tee was perfect, chip on a two puts. Nice par 3 14th which I par'd then. 16th was a nice looking hole of the tee too but i only managed a 5.

A very good day, all for free too, will def be back there one day maybe to play the other 9 in the morning then the 18 in the afternoon.

I am playing here on the 28th so did a search before making my own post. I am told it is wonderful and reading this post that is clearly a common thought.

I am playing as a guest of a company, 14 groups of 4 with some texas scrable in the moring on the Princes then 18 holes of stableford in the afternoon on the Championship course. I am wondering as a corporate group.. what tees are we likely to be playing from. From what I can see and what you have said it playes very differently from each set... will they put us off the yellows?

Thanks so much

Alex

Firstly I hope you enjoy your visit!

With the exception of the 3rd hole the difference between the yellows and the whites is really down to where the markers are placed that day; they are moved around to reflect conditions as much as possible. Despite the overall difference in playing distance you will be more affected by the wind on the day, and how much rain we get between now and then (for the last couple of weeks the ball has started running on the fairways....give us some rain and it will change etc)
