Hi,

Ive just took up the wonderful game of golf recently. And joined a localish club for a month and got me wondering, when should i start lookign at achieveing a handicap? Whats a realistic timescale??

Cheers

I'd say get the cards in as quick as possible, the worst you can get is 28 so does it really matter? The quicker you get it the quicker you can start chipping away at it. I waited 6 months and wish I'd just got on with it to be honest.

Hi Buddy, welcome to the forum, Listen to whats offered, then make up your own mind.

Best thing to do is to have a few lessons, get out on the course and start hitting some balls around.

its always nice to play with someone, and if they are a better player, watch and learn

as regards when to put in a set of handicap cards?

The maximum handicap for a male is 28, most golf courses are around par 70-72 so if you are hitting below 100 then you can happily put in the cards and get a proper handicap.

If you are in the 110+ area, you can still put in the cards, but your handicap will be 28 and it might as well be 40

You need to put in 3 competition cards per year for your handicap to remain active, these are done at weekday or weekend medal or stableford matches.

So tell us how you are hitting

Thanks for the advice. Ive only carded one of my rounds so far and I scored 116 on a par 71 course :(

Ive been up the course at least 3 times a week the past fortnight. But the problem I'm having is finding playing partners, none of my mates are into golf. So I've only had two rounds with company. And when im going round myself I can feel myself getting lazy and playing loose shots etc.

My biggest game problem has to be my putting im lucky if I finish a hole with 2 putts. More or less every hole is a 3 putt. So if I could cut down on my putting strokes id be closer to being handicap eligable

No worries

the good news is that there are loads of golfers out there who are worse than you,

I still reckon a few lessons would help

the rest comes with time and practice

Good luck
