Yesterday I played 3 under CSS, so I got reduced 3 X .4 so I am now on 22.8 so will play off 23, if I repeat the process and get another 1.2 I will go down to 21.6 and play off 22. Even if I went round in 5 under I would only drop to 20.8 or 21 playing. It seems to me it will take ages to drop much now.

I played 4 under a couple of weeks back and got cut from 16.4 to 13.8. As this wasn't the first time I have done this in 2012...the extra point deduction (as I understand it) was due to a new Congu ruling called 'exceptional play'. Has anyone heard of it? By the way, congrats on your reduction - you will soon hit your target

Do what I did...play well in a small field who all play rubbish.
That'll speed up your reductions

Linda, The software we use (Club 2000) automatically flags these when we close a competition and gives us the choice of applying it or not. After reading the rational behind this new rule, our handicap secretery has asked us to apply the extra shot reduction every time it is flagged. (I work on the comps committee at my club).

Given that you 'only' played to 21, do you really expect to be reduced any faster? Unless you continue to improve - and all the best in doing so - 'the system' is working as required - cutting you reasonably as you approach your 'stable' value.

no but if I do the same score again I will only be reduced to 22 and once down to 20 the reduction is only .3, it seems this is how people get accused of being a bandit.

You are so impatient. If you repeated your score, you would only be 2 under CSS (assuming it was the same). You can't expect to keep on beating CSS by 3 to 5 shots, that would be nice but unrealistic - the rate of reductions has to diminish as your handicap gets lower.

Me!

Just found out I've been handed a 2 shot ESR as a result of a good performance on Sunday and then again yesterday. Handicaps can come down quickly, I've now dropped from 19 to 14. Sunday's Medal is going to be interesting now.

Surely with a 4 out of 6 hit rate the handicap committee have some evidence for a rule 19 type cut on top of the normal reductions. Either way, your playing well and just be patient and it'll reach a point where it hits a plateau

I did have a 2 shot ESR after the 3rd Homer, my winning scores have been steadily dropping 107, 103, 88, 95. on thelast 5 holes of the 95 I took 6 on a par 3 then 8 on a par 4 (easiest on the course) and finished off missing an 18 inch putt. 7 shots lost there.

I think you are doing amazingly well and you should be proud rather than feeling embarassed. You are doing all that you should by competing in qualifiers. No doubt at all your handicap will catch up with your ability.

It is the bandits who do not enter many qualifiers (and write to the committee to get shots back) who should be embarassed.

Seems to me that clubs are making their own rules up about using ESR ;)

Well, the Scottiish Union opted out.

I believe all participating clubs should accept the recommendations. And possible consider continuing Clause 23 for cases like Louise's where the improvement and results sneak under the ESR radar.

If the competition/handicap convenor is doing their job properly they will use all weapons at their disposal ;)

Just use them properly and fairly and for all instances not just on personal vendettas
