Hi All

Got my 3 cards in. I played from the white tee, SSS is 68. i shot 3 rounds of 72,72,73 (Gross Scores) , No scores worse than a double (had 2) and i work this out to a 4 handicap.

Go to the club today and see that my handicap is 6

Spoke to the HCP Secretary and he states that 5.6 (6) was the lowest he could go and my details had to go to the local union being a cat 1 golfer. Fair enough, He is a good man and has helped me get this sorted quickly to be fair.

However, on another note, the Yellow Tees SSS is 67 , meaning that if he has entered my details selecting this tee, then my handicap would be correct. has he just marked the wrong blocks or is it the lowest it can go for a new handicap (my old one expired before the new system came into force in 2010)

I'm new to the club and everyone has been brilliant, and i don't want to upset the applecart but i can't help feel that if i get hot, this 6 hcp, to some no doubt, will look questionable. Please don't think i'm "showing off my scores" , i have bought up to play this sport to the rules, and i don't want to be known as "that lad who wangled a few extra shots"

Thoughts?

Im pretty sure he cant allocate you a cat 1 handicap, but if he thinks you should be awarded one then he needs to go to your county union and basically they then allocate the handicap correctly based on all the information. They certainly can allocate a handicap in cat 1 and Im pretty sure based on your scores thats what should be happening

If, and it seems they do, the cards merit Cat 1, your Handicap Committee needs to pass them immediately to the County Union Secretary - together with your playing/handicap history - without making any allocation.

Afterthought - if scores were processed as if yellow tees, Cat 1 would still be on as 5.

I find it sad and, quite frankly, ridiculous that a Handicap Sec is allowed to process a new handicap of 5.5 but can't do one at 5.4...
Is CAT 1 such a secret society that you're only allowed in by " the powers that be" that sit at the top table and throw scraps to the commoners below......
If your 3 cards show that you need a handicap of 4, then 4 is what you should get, any Handicap Sec empowered to maintain handicaps should be able to do it and there's little reason to have to send it "upstairs".

Well initial handicaps are allocated on whole numbers, so it's a not really arguing that point, but as stated he should have passed it without allocating anything. Seems to have made a mess of it, and to be honest I'm not sure why/how he got it wrong.

It not so much about the high end of cat 1 but the lower end I guess. With entry to some of the big scratch comps balloted on handicap I guess there would be room for "foul play"

Yah, I can see that..

But what are the County guys going to do? Exactly the same as the HSec. They don't know the player, they didn't see him play.......they know nothing about him.
It just strike me as a bit of Elitism - " you can't join our "Club" unless we say so....."

Not sure about the handicap situation, but we'll done on some damn fine scoring. :)

Cat 1 does seem an elite secret society but can understand why that is the case due to the balloting involved in some comps (saw on on twitter recently where ballot was at 0.8!)

H/cap sec can only issue 6 but pass cards onto county for further discussion and ask questions think further cards and playing history are looked into.

Good luck with your new club and h/cap it won't be 6 for long shooting great consistant score like those!
