I am looking to sort out a CONGU handicap. From what I have heard once you have one, you can only improve it in competitions? Or can you just tee up with a friend and mark each others cards?

To think I could only hand in around 25-35 cards a year is a little disappointing.

Thanks.

No you can put a card in at any time, I asked my club sec about this and he told me that a pair of us could put cards in after achieving a handicap, and not in competition, but we must inform him first and we must score the round completely, (couldnt tear up card if things went badly). I think he said they dont like you to do it too often (I think he mentioned fortnightly but dont quote me on that)

How many cards do you need to hand in a year then lol. 20+ seems to be enough for pretty much every other club golfer I know, just don't see why you would think you need more

20+ is plenty!!!

Also I feel competition scores are a much better reflection of true handicap. I have scored to 16 h/c in social play but never in a comp therfore am glad it isnt that low (yet!)

What you are talking about is "Supplementary Scores" which are rounds you have to notify in advance of playing and take the bad rounds with the good. You can play up to 10 a year with a normal limit of one a week unless your club decrees otherwise. Scores are assessed against SSS and clubs are bound to accept them if they are marked by a handicap-holding member.

to sort out a congu handicap you have to be a member of a club, disappointed with 25-35 qualifiying cards youll be lucky to than many rounds with the weather as it is! :(

The voice of reason, albeit from a slightly unusual sourse

I personally don't hand in supplementary cards. I just play the medals and stablefords and the odd board comp when time allows.

Interested to learn that supplementary cards can be submitted. Since starting playing a year ago the only cards I submit are our midweek medal cards and these are limited in number, played only in summer, and so far I have only managed to submit two cards this year.

I have score 36pts in a comp at a nighbouring club and progressed through a couple of rounds in our club knock-out to mutterings about my handicap...but in my two midweek medals I have carded 102 and 109!! The latter after taking 10 on the par 5 first and 60 for the front 9!

Maybe supplementary cards might be a way to go.

Yep. Supplementary Cards can be used for handicap.

You have to specify before you go out that it will be a Supplementary Card, so you are playing as if you are in a competition. This 'pressure' that is deemed to be important,

Thanks Rosecott, you put it much better than I did.

I thought that you only need to hand in 3 comp. cards per season to keep your handicap official. I only just managed this
last year.

Actually thinking about it I put in 3 or 4 cards last year from rounds played away from my home course. They were all signed by someone with a handicap and the tee used marked on the card. I don't think there's a limit on how many of these you can hand in. Actually I think it's encouraged.

In order to keep your handicap "active" you need to submit 3 cards in a calendar year which can be a combination of handicap qualifying competitions and Supplementary Scores. These must be done at your Home Club unless you are a member of more than one club or playing in an Open Competition or a competition run by an organisation authorised by your national association to run handicap qualifiers. Merely submitting cards played away from your home course on a casual basis are not acceptable.
