Hey guys, new to the site and the wonderful sport of golf and would like some help.

I have recently been given my handicap of 28 and have been wondering after hearing about how it can go up and down with your scores in competitions. If I entered a comp and hit above my handicap what would happen?

If your handicap is 28.0 then nothing will change. If its less than that you would go up by 0.1

Thanks for the response Keeno, I thought that would be the case but I wasn't sure if would be taken away and I would have to put more cards in to get another.

Time to pluck up some courage and enter haha

Go for as many comps as you can and get used to them. Try to plot your way around and play for bogeys at first. It'll come down!

Your handicap will go up 0.1 (once under a 28 handicap) every time you are outside your buffer. It will come down 0.4 for every shot under you are. If 3 under you come down 1.2 for example.

It's all explained here- http://www.uhgs.co.uk/?p=1987

There are changes in the pipeline where club can chose to increase the maximum handicap for club competitions, If your club implements it then that would mean that you would get the 0.1 increases.
