Handicap Cuts

Whilst chatting at work and through viewing this forum, I have noticed how different clubs apply cuts in our handicaps. At my club I think it’s fair to say, they will take cut handicaps for scores under par, but I have not seen anyone cut for general play. I have scored plenty of 4 point and even 5 point holes (sorry to say I still have two shots on three holes). As you could imagine this leads to plenty of chat after in the clubhouse. Some say I should go and ask for a cut in handicap, but, I feel that this is not earning the cut.
I would be interested to hear how others have been treated by the handicap system, good and bad. I know that this year my handicap will fall as last year was my first year playing comps. And the sooner it falls the better, as far as I’m concerned.

You get cut by playing under CSS, but different amounts according to what division you are in, or go up 0.1 for being over. This is standardised accross the country by the R and A.

However, there can be a review once a year when the computer spits out names who have either under or over achieved during the comps in the preceding 12 months. There is nothing personal in this, the machine decides. The h/cap comittee then make a decision whether to cut (or raise) the h/cap and by how much for the people on the list. You can also use this review period to appeal your h/cap. either up or down.

At any time you can go the secretary and ask for a cut, which he may allow. Rare to get shots back this way.

I am of the opinion that h/caps should be earned, and that asking for a voluntary cut is wrong. If your h/cap is too high, you will get sorted out fairly quickly, and often if people think you are a bandit, this is off the shorter tees, with the pins in easy places. Your h/cap is off the tips, with the evil medal pins.

Sorry for the hijack btw, I think all cuts should come from the club - Someimes I play under my handicap - but thats just when I am playing well. If you are getting 42 points every week then I agree you need cut, if not then let the handicap committee and computer sort it.

css gets spat out of the computer too. It depends on the scoring on each individual hole by the whole field, and can vary by normally 2 shots either way, depending on how hard the course is playing.
This is why even if you N/R, you should still put the card in the box, as it will effect css.

Thanks! I now understand.
