Perhaps that was the problem - you were subtracting

Subtracting is more difficult if you were never a darts player. It's curious, though, that sums is used for arithmetical processing in general, not just addition as in the sum of.... I expect there is a technical term for that but if so, it is long forgotten.

Not all number are positive, you can add negative numbers together with positive ones.
