Hi All,

I'm a long time lurker but thought I'd sign up to ask this question.

Bit of a backstory, I joined my local club back in March 2014 with a view of just enjoying the game without any real desire to compete in club comps etc more focused on my Rugby. As I progressed I decided to hand my cards in to get my official handicap. One particularly good round (by my standards) in one of my handicap rounds meant I was allocated a 13 handicap which at the time I felt was a little ambitious but would give me something to really work towards.

So I carry on playing social golf scoring consistently in the mid to low 90's, nowhere near my allocated handicap but I'm not particularly bothered at this point.

Fast forward to October 2014 and whilst playing Rugby I suffered a nasty knee / ankle injury and after a fair bit of surgery and rehab etc I'm cleared to return to golf. My new knee setup etc meant I have had to make some significant changes to my swing and subsequently I've struggled to get anywhere near where I was in the summer of 2014. My real problem however is that I'm totally hooked on golf and want to start playing some comps (need to feed my competitive side now I've quit Rugby!) but off 13 I would be a total embarrassment to myself.

My question is can a handicap be adjusted significantly in such circumstances or would I only be allowed to accept endless +0.1's until I get back to where I should be?

Thanks

Welcome. We have a few handicap experts on here who will be along to answer your questions. Is your handicap still "competitive"? If not do you know when you last played a qualifying competition?

There are new regulations in place this year to consider those not hitting their buffer on a regular basis "Continuous Handicap Review – Introduction of a process to flag players with 7 consecutive 0.1 handicap increases so that Handicap Committees can review and apply an immediate handicap increase if required."

So that will help rather than play all year not getting close. A word with your handicap secretary as well explaining your situation would be worthwhile.

Good luck!
