Haggis

SocketRocket still hasn't found the 'timorous wee beastie' that was frequenting his kitchen!

Happy birthday Rabbie - you hypocritical, lecherous drunkard and spinner of rhymes and resurrecter of tunes and songs!

Fair fa your honest sonsey face, great chieftan owr the pudding race. And I can address the complete verse by heart.

Guy Fawkes Night

You celebrate a failed poet we celebrate a failed saboteur...

Who's #1 target was a Scot!

My view is that the English are quite content letting the 'other parts' of Britain celebrate their heros/champions in the arrogant belief that they have the ability to squash the dissenters when they get too rowdy!

An Aussie colleague described the phenomenon as 'small country syndrome'!

Absolutely no Scottish connection to my family but I do love a bit of haggis after spending time up in Dundee.

As for Burns a very average poet at best, ad for England well we're not even allowed to celebrate St George's day properly without local government fearing we may offend someone for simply being patriotic.

Two posts saying Burns was an 'average' poet.

If that is the case how can you explain how widely read [and sung] his works are.

[Or is it simply that you do not understand the language he uses.]

The fact of the matter is that many Scots bang on about Burns yet couldn't quote more than a couple of lines at best.

John Keats, now there's a poet

It's called being entitled to our own opinion. Just because something is widely read doesn't mean we all have to like it, 50 Shades of Grey is widely read to but hardly a literary masterpiece!

I can perfectly understand Burns written word it's just I don't think it's very good.

Somehow I don't think folk will be quoting passages of 50 shades a couple of centuries after its publication date.

As opposed to Burns

"On the Ning Nang Nong
Where the Cows go Bong!
and the monkeys all say BOO!
There's a Nong Nang Ning
Where the trees go Ping!
And the tea pots jibber jabber joo.
On the Nong Ning Nang
All the mice go Clang
And you just can't catch 'em when they do!
So its Ning Nang Nong
Cows go Bong!
Nong Nang Ning
Trees go ping
Nong Ning Nang
The mice go Clang
What a noisy place to belong
is the Ning Nang Ning Nang Nong!!"

Brilliant. And I can now see why Jocks are Jocks

That sounds suspiciously like Spike Milligan.

I love Burns and love haggis. My love of Burns goes back to primary school when in music we learnt to recite and sing Burns poetry and songs - and were assessed by The Burns Federation (my mum still have the certificates I was awarded) - and on a school trip we were taken to Alloway, the house, museum and to the R. Afton.

And I love haggis - it does seem to be becoming rather trendy in restaurants - getting served with steaks and with chicken dishes - yummmm. And it's turnip btw. Swede???

It's the poetry of a man who understands completely the land, love and death and all things in between - and all with a social conscience (if that his own conscience wi' the lasses and bairns he sired could have been a wee bit more focussed :))

I had jerk chicken with rice and peas instead, but I had a rather large malt later on.

I have a wee haggis in the fridge, freshly shot over the weekend. Once it's hung for a while it'll be fine and tender.

;)
