Grip Size/Thickness

How can you tell if the grip is the right size for you, is there a good rule of thumb?

Also, how would a grip that is too thick effect your game?

the old school way was to take your grip and you should be able to just squeeze a pinky in between your left pinky and palm of your left hand, cant get in grip too thin, loads of room grip too thick.

very thick grips should in theory quieten the hands down (look at the superthick putter grips out just for that purpose)
