Grim Up North

It puts -' course on temporary greens ' in to perspective.

Living not to far away from an area that can be subject to similar levels of flooding in some years my thoughts are with all affected by it.

My course is 13 miles from where I live. I decided to call it a day re golf Tuesday and Thursday. Saw the local news last night and it showed them ready to close roads 1/2 mile from the course. It just never stopped raining. More locally, there's a place called Berry hill near us. In essence a large estate has been built in an old sand Quarry. About 5.00 pm last night there was a land slip where the wall of the quarry just collapsed. It's a wonder no one was killed.
Thankfully it's now stopped raining and the suns out for a bit.

Just make sure when you go out you have your "big coat" on.

My son was in Meadowhall yesterday (he lives in north Sheffield) and considered the actions and words of some there to be excessive over-reaction and a catastrophising of the 'flooding'. It wasn't great - but it wasn't half as bad as was being presented. Clearly there are other parts in the Sheffield/Rotherham area that have been hit bad by flooding - and many householders badly affected.

Bit bizarre that reports tell of folks having to spend the night in Meadowhall...maybe it got worse after he left...

Anyway - he's driving up to Carlisle today so best make sure he's aware of some flooding up Penistone Rd (A61) as that's his route to the M1.

I live at one side of meadowhall and work the other so i can say it is bad on the back side (bus station ,Meadowhall road) and Attercliffe was ok earlier however as i tried to get in to work the road was closed which was an over reaction as it was
passable with care and i did go through only to be berated by a police officer , however i pointed out to him i have been called in due to flooding of HV substations and we needed to gt them pumped out stopping an area wide trip.
Penistone road looked ok at 0600 this morning and several underpasses had drained.
As SILH says the flooding was not too bad just ( compared to 2007 i think it was) drivers not being careful that contributed to a few additional problems .

Got off the M1 at the top end of Sheffield ok this morning but then took me 45 minutes to drive the two miles to the factory near Ecclesfield. The small road to the factory is flooded but luckily I was able to get around it.
Thats the spirit , after all its only a few puddles for us northerners :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

think most Of south Yorks, derby, notts border is GUR, be ok tomorrow with a bit of pick and place on the highways.

That aside, terrible news re the woman who drowned in derbyshire, there is still vast amounts of water about. be careful folks driving in water.

Central Derby has flooded apparently...travel is mayhem in some areas, buses cancelled

From the overhead views looks like there is going to be no post delivered for some time as all the RM vans at one depot are under water.

was on the box earlier, apparently they have had more rain than in 2007 around the sheffield area, however the flood defences built since then have done there job. don't think the worst is over for some :(

Popped to Morrison’s at 17.00. Quarter of the car park was underwater. Fortunately a lot of roads closed and people aren’t getting to the shop.
Could easily park and only around 20 people shopping. Bliss.

Pick and place on the highways!
Isn’t that a bit dangerous Tash.?

if you get five mins, check out pictures of Rufford Ford. latest one is a morrisons van

Feel really gutted for the people of Doncaster and surrounding areas, it seems the flood defenses in and around Sheffield have worked but only
moved the problem downriver , there needs to be a more joined up thinking with the defense strategy

This is a major concern .
Water has to go somewhere once the rivers are full.
But we keep building on flood plains.

It's been raining a bit in Surrey today and my grass is looking a bit wet - where are the Emergency Services when you need them? Actually I suspect that Corbyn has a point about South Yorkshire vs Surrey.

I can only imagine what people are having to deal with: I note some have unfortunately had insurance claims rejected for this 1:100 year occurrence!

Despite the personal and family tragedies I see that we now have our apology for what we call MPs/politicians are trying to score points in the 'blame' game!

The town i live in flooded around 10 years ago. They have spent a fortune on flood defences but it required a number of things, there was not one magic solution. One visual defence that is very effective relates to a big problem the year it flooded. At a couple of key sections a build up of river debris had occurred, branches, silt etc. Post flood they cleared the river out and then but some large concrete posts in the river, much head scratching ensued. Now when a storm occurs the branches etc catch between the posts and are cleared out when it calms down. They are not allowed to build up year after year, restricting the flow of the water. I saw it a couple of months ago and it looked like a dam beavers had made, amazing how much it was catching. I mention this as I saw locals being interviewed around Sheffield who quoted how the river had been neglected and whilst the levels were okay in some locations some key points were backed up and flooded. It sounds like those points need clearing and a 'catch' mechanism is required.

Unquestionably there will be a range of solutions needed but keeping rivers clear has to be a basic.
