Posted about a something similar a couple of weeks ago after borrowing a set of the father-in-law's graphite shafted Ping Rapture irons. It was a bit of a revelation and I'm probably going to head along somewhere for a fitting soon. Just to satisfy curiosity more than anything (who am I kidding?).

According to TrackMan my (current metal shafted) average 7-iron swing speed is 78mph, it's not fast but not the slowest and seems about average. But I was getting an extra 20 yards and a much better flight and trajectory with borrowed clubs than I do with my own. It's impossible not to be tempted.

I was one of those fitted that day ,and i would say that you really should look at the graphite shafts ,I took both my old set and the new YONEX clubs with me to the range for a thorough work out to see if the numbers they came up with on the day were true or just mumbo jumbo.
well the numbers didnt lie, the YONEX really worked better for me.
now weather it is because the irons are jacked up compared to my old clubs or the graphite shaft really did improve my distance i couldnt say ,but the dispersion was definitely tighter and the ball flight higher than my old clubs.
I havent got a slow swing speed [98mph with a driver] so I would suggest that if you think they wont work for you then you are missing out .

We tried Callaway's Graphite shafts on their Apex irons at the last GM Kings of Distance day at The London Club. Have to say, the stats clearly gave an improvement to my iron play mainly in dispersion but also offered faster ball speeds & approx. 12 yards more distance on a 7 iron. I'm a 5 handicapper with a Driver Swing speed of over 100mph but I will definitely go down the graphite route when purchasing a new set of irons in future.

I have the lighter versions of the dynamic gold in my iron shafts, simply because i prefer the feel, but I've never compared them to the weight of a similar spec graphite shaft. Has anyone here done so?

I have just taken delivery of a set of Callaway XR Steelheads with graphite shafts, my average s/s for a 7 iron is 74mph and I have gained 6 yards with a 7 iron over my ping i25's, average dispersion at 2 yards.

PS - now we are owt of Europe is it legal to mention yards again ?

I changed to graphite when I started looking to get back into my golf after my accident. I also dropped to a senior flex shaft. It took a little getting used to to start with, but, it has made things so much easier. Whilst I still use a couple of wedges with Nippon NSPRO 950 shafts, everything else in the bag is now a graphite senior flex shaft. A smooth swing and the ball flies true and high even if not as far as I used to be able to hit it.

Have a look at graphite and the appropriate flex, it may well make a huge difference for you ☺
