GPS devices v phone apps

Never liked using my iPhone on the course. Found myself checking emails / social notifications etc.

I had the Garmin S2 and thought it was pretty decent. Only changed it when I got a new watch. Also found that in the winter it was hard to get to the watch under layers and layers of clothes!

I'm on the lookout for something else at the moment as I do miss the yardage help

Never even considered one before but after reading this thread I've downloaded the free Golfshot app to try this Friday. Will be interesting to see what benefit I gain from it, if any.

I have been using Game Golf phone app in my casual games, is it ok to use this for competitions then? I have avoided it so far but would like to if I can! :)

On second thoughts, the app doesn't have the course I'm playing on Friday, nor my club, so I'm currently deleting it. Haha, oh well.

I searched for Haste Hill within the app itself and nothing came up. Weird. (Same for Thorney Park which is where we're playing Friday.) Other local ones did come up, like Ruislip and Rickmansworth so I assumed they just didn't have the other two.

This happened to me with the Game Golf app- when I got to the course and turned on the gps the app located it. May be worth re downloading and trying!

Ok fair enough, I'll download it again and try it Friday. :)
..unless you think Game Golf is better than Golfshot?

I only use GameGolf because I have the device, so use it for the shot tracking- not for the yardages etc.

I have a garmin for the yardages.

Never used Golfshot but I am sure it is fine- I have used Hole19 which I find is great, I have not tested the yardages for accuracy though as I just use the Garmin

I've just downloaded Hole 19 as well, and straight away it looks like it has more/better features than Golfshot, so I'll be trying Hole 19 on Friday. Cheers for that.

bought myself a garmin s1 there from ebay. £35

Broken strap - but i wouldnt have wore it on my wrist anyways, i'll be strapping it to the bag as i find wearing things on my wrist awkward when im swinging

Couldnt turn down a bargin like that for £35
