GolfShot GPS IPhone and Android

Am I allowed to use the golf shot app in competitions? Why is it any different from other GPS devices?

if your phone has a compass on it or the ability to function as a compass then you are not allowed to use any phone apps in comps

What difference does a compass make? I'm guessing the iPhone 4s falls into this category.

yes the iphone 4s has a compass. the difference a compass makes is that is that the rules of golf say they are not allowed

Unfortunately the R&A didnt do anything to help this matter in the latest rule changes. Realistically the difference between what advantage an Iphone/Android/GPS can give you is very little. How ever one thing that has always been in the rules is the compass. Depending how you read the rules you can make arguments to say that all these devices could be banned, depending how you interpret the ruling. Remember golf clubs can make local rulings about gps systems being allowed as technically they are not allowed how ever they cannot introduce a local rule to allow compass featured phones.

There are lots of threads about iphones and other phones etc that could keep you entertained for hours but if you like playing to the rules, iphone is a no go.

Better with a proper course gps anyway, less to worry about in rain or if you lose it plus they are legal for comps.

Plus if the mrs knows you use a phone on golf course then no excuses left to ignore it haha

also the battery life is grim whilst using these apps.

I use golfshot on iphone, it kills the battery and as stated banned in comps.

Once funds permit I will be going the GPS route and possible a rangefinder also. I doubt these devices/apps will be allowed for some time yet so may aswell stump up the £££ for a standalone device
