Do we realise how lucky we are? Golf subs in the region of £6/1000 p.a. Clubs worth a similar amount, free leisure time and great company.

The reason I say this was that I was filling my car with petrol this morning an a young girl put £5.05 of fuel in her car. Just over 3 litres. I felt so sorry for her.

the problem is the food chain, some earn more, some have less.

On a side note for a hobby it isnt as dear as some make out, most people in my last hobby would spend atleast 10K a year, with some spending in the excess of 40-50k. this makes golf very very cheap.

Every game of golf or practice session I have is money that my family don't get to play with, I truly appreciate that my team allow me the time and money to do my thing!!

OS, what was your last hobby? Burning £20 notes......?

motocross at a pretty high level, 2 bikes a season would cost 5k each and end up worth 3k through the year, and forget running costs and wear and tear, a days riding alone would cost around £80-100 per day, some weekends id ride twice too. any engine blows through the year could cost up to £2500, tyres were £100 a set and would last around 3-4 outings max... not a cheap sport.

that was in 2007, with rises in raw materials for parts, entree fees to races and increased fuel costs, a average day is now £120-£140 without taking into account wear and tear on the bike, any broken parts, wear and tear on your van, kit or anything else.

By comparison golf is only as expensive as you make it, and actually a decent membership package can give serious value for money.

Over the course of a year I don't find golf to be that great an expense my annual subs are £750 which play even just 4 times a month would equate to £15 a round. I play at least 3 times a week in the summer plus the once a week in winter so probably at least 90 rounds a year so if I played my own course the whole time that cost would be down to as little as £8.30 a week.

That is less than it used to cost me each week to play football for my local pub team, and a hell of a lot less than most people would spend on fags each week.

The cost is basically relative to what your leisure time fix is mine is golf so once a year I pay £750, whereas my brother who's a smoker and plays footie spends £2920... Yet says he cannot afford to play golf. So I would say it doesn't cost as much as people think.

As for the petrol no need feel sorry for the lass, she may simply have had other reasons for putting such a small amount in.

i agree with fader, people have an income and within reason how they spend it is down to them. One of the inlaws is moaning things are tight, hes just moved into he's first place and has just had he's first child. all you hear is how tight things are, yet he has atleast 20 fags a day. now i dont know the exact costs, but im guessing thats roughly £7.50 a day, so thats around £200 a month, or £2400 a year on fags. things cant be that tight, its just how you choose to spend your money.

I wouldnt , unless i knew her whole story , i have friends & friends of HID who would be out fri/sat night drinking & smoking & taxis home etc , come monday morning no dosh for the week , this even happened in the good times , i work 2 jobs , my better half works 4days a week (she is on a scheme called term time , she is off the 2 months when the kids are on school holidays, her pay is deducted each week to cover her pay for the 2 months , a sacrafice we make so she is home with the kids all summer ) i wouldnt class myself lucky , more so maybe organised , if i have an extra expence that crops up then we sacrafice something else to pay for that , i do extra shifts in my second job over christmas to pay for my sub , Lucky ?? im healthy enough to be able to so maybe i am lucky , doesent feel like it getig into bed at 4am every sat morning 21 hours after geting out of it tho..

I'd love to have more money to spend on golf. But it isn't important to enjoy the game.

The problem I have is time.

I just don't have enough time to play as much as I'd like.

Work, HID, home, then anything left can be spent playing golf. I know I could easily change that if I could be happy being a single shelf-filler at Tescos living in a rented bedsit.

And don't even think that I haven't considered it.

Many, many times

This a good point. I personally don't smoke (never have), don't drink all that much, don't go out shopping or drinking every weekend and generally don't waste money on things I don't need. In fact I'd go as far as to say golf probably takes up 99% my disposable income. Mrs Hawkeye even told me to buy my new clubs because I never spend any money on myself. I gave up my season ticket at Fulham as I couldn't afford both that and golf. If I couldn't afford it I wouldn't do it. Everyone has a choice.

On top of that, my Mrs will often only put enough diesel in the motor to see her through the week, she'll quite often only put a tenner in if that's all she needs. Never judge a book by it's cover as they say.

£5.05 of diesel in my car would not get me home from the petrol station.

I would love to have a season ticket at arsenal, but the choice is golf or footy. I get much better value from my golf club, as I am often there 5 times a week. At £1200 I get good value from it. Given the way that the arse are playing at the moment, I would not get such value from a season ticket. What ever your budget, there will be compromises you have to make.

Its £1500 subs per annum. Even then I still have a choice whether I pay it or not. After that, anything else is down to me. I'm lucky that HID is very understanding and that she has finally found a permanent job again so we're clearing the problems caused when she lost he last role and had to temp. As we don't have a family I can afford to go to the range, indulge in my FJ fetish and play in some GM meets. As long as my golf doesn't leave us short to pay the bills, eat and enjoy a modicum of comfort then all is well with her.

Given the way we've played this year, Hawkeye made a good decision to give up the Fulham season ticket

This is one of the most thought provoking threads I think I've read on this forum in my time here. Its impossible to tell if the girl only needed that amount of petrol or because that was all she could afford. If that was all she could afford then yes I would feel sorry for her, but thats how the world works... I don't think golf is that expensive a hobby, you can make it expensive if you want top of the range everything, but if youre happy with what you can afford then to me thats not expensive, and if you're playing golf when you know you can't afford it then thats your own fault :p ;)

I agree with oddsocks. I'm one of those (filthy) smokers and smoke 30 per day. My subs are 1400 quid a year, but that's nothing compared to the 3500+ I spend a year on ciggies. For what you get out of golf it is cheap in my opinion

Golf is expensive here, wherever you play. But the opportunities to play football are limited, and there's not a great deal to spend money on. So i don't mind forking out as much as I do.

I'm hopeful that i'll be able to afford my Arsenal season ticket AND golf when we return to the UK, but then it's all about family/lifestyle balance, so i'll choose between the two I imagine. All depends on financial position at the time doesn't it.

When i was 18/19/20 it was tricky to get out of the rut I was in. It was hard staying in 3 weekends of the month, because you end up being a hermit. You want to work to live, rather than live to work.

The reason she did that was probably because she doesn't understand that it's more economical to put more fuel in because you'll stop needing to go to the bloody petrol station as often. If I put £5 I'd be back daily but if I put £10 in I'd be back in 3 days, £20 usually 5-6 days and a full tank I won't splash out for about 10 days...
Also doesn't understand the issues with running your car on the fumes and pulling all the crap from the fuel tank into the fuel lines/injectors. But hey...there's no learning some people!

On the golf costs...I've not seen a local course that charges £1000 yet!

Homer - how much do you reckon you spend on the range each year? Which one do you go to?
