And the pounds will take care of themselves - right??

Put petrol in the car this morning and local filling station had signs up that their card reader was out of order so cash only. Darn it...only got a tenner in cash so that will have to do. Started to fill and at £2.79 the pumped just stopped. Girl came out and asked if I was paying cash so I said "yes" and she went back and re-started the pump. At which point it moved on to £2.80. Managed to put exactly a tenner in and put the nozzle back in the slot and the pump turned to £10.01. Got me to wondering does this happen every time at every pump? We mainly pay on card these days so not looking to put an exact amount in...they could be making plenty of pounds this way?!

I keep a good eye on it and will argue the toss at the counter if it happens, but yes, its not a rare thing, I see it happen a bit....

It is more common these days because the higher price of fuel means the tiniest drop has a measurable value so will tip to the next penny very easily. Beat them at their own game, stop at 9.99 and get your penny back.

Used to happen to me a fair bit too, always frustrating as I took care to stop on the amount

I then used to always deliberately stop at a penny under i.e £9.99 to get back the pennies 'they owed me' (i know)

Here they key in the value of the fuel you want to dispense so that it shuts off when its reached and you cant overspend and I've never had the 'penny' overspend

Although drivers don't put the fuel in anyway as there's no self serve

That would irritate me too.

thankfully these days I just fill up to the top as Im using a tank of fuel a week.... So don't have to worry about the odd penny.

A petrol station I use occasionally has a tray by the till with coppers in it, so if it comes to 10.01 you can take a penny out of the tray.

When I was in spain we just entered the amount we wanted to put in on this little machine connected to the pump and the pump automatically stopped when you reached that number.
Was better than messing around trying to get it to stop bang on £20.

Yep same in Cyprus - you put your money in first then took your petrol and it stopped at the amount you put in

Winds up up something rotten in the US if you just want to fill the car up if you are taking a hire car back but they are asking you how much you want to put in. 'I don't bleeding know yet numb nuts as I have not filled it up' is my usual repost.

New sainsburys near me has this! its great!

I'm sure my local is rigged and its impossible to stop either on a 99 or exact pound when using their pump. I've often tried to fill exactly to the pound, say £20, and stop the pump at £19.98 or £19.99 ... the slightest squeeze then sends the pump jumping up to £20.01.

A 1p difference is nothing, but I like rounded numbers, hence the need to get it to a round £20. ;)

Back in my day... You would pull up to the pump ask the attendant to put in a quids worth and leave him to it... Those were the days... Proper motorin';)
and they would check your oil and water level and tyres if you asked them,we have unmanned card only petrol stations near me now,put your card in type the amount you wish to buy and away you go,would never use them you dont know who has tampered with the machines.

Tescos have this option at their pumps

Checking oil on a recently stopped engine doesnt really tell very much apart from the colour of the oil as most of it is still held up in the engine rather than the sump where it is measured after a longer period of inactivity. Cleaning the windscreen, that is a plus though.
