I had a look at tracking strokes gained through the golf metrics app by the guy that did Every Shot Counts book. It's going to be too cumbersome for me...... I'm a bit out of touch, so what's the options for using a GPS watch which can do decent stats including strokes gained?

If you want to dabble without outlay, can start with golfpad and myroundpro apps on the phone.

Myroundpro do talk about strokes gained, and have tied into watches but can't comment on how well. (I had dabbled with it originally with the MS Band).

Shot Scope watch doesn't have strokes gained but it tracks scores and all shots e.g. distance hit, accuracy of drives, GIR, putts etc. It then has leaderboards so for example on average driving distance it tells me where i am globally for users (1686th), for handicap bracket of 13-20 (441st) and Nation (908th) with 4 green dots - I have four for the latter two but three for globally, so it suggests I hit the ball relatively far but not the top level.

It shows relatively higher placings for approach proximity, short game and putts per round but actually not particularly high on one putts for example.

So not full strokes gained but an area of strengths/weaknesses against other users.

They've got a new model coming out V3 which i believe is smaller and more lightweight which was often seen as an issue or the V2 is probably discounted. That version is slightly junky, and you do have to go through the round (takes 5 mins top) to make sure it's picked up all shots, tag those that are positional so out of stats etc but it's a pretty good gadget if you like those sorts of things.

I've been using the taylormade app. Its a bit fiddly on a phone until you get used to how it works, but on a smartwatch its a great app. Gives you all your stats, yardages etc, and lets you edit the round afterwards on the phone if you need to

How does this work....do you enter the shots via the smart watch as you go? Does the watch also give you yardages to front, middle, back and hazards, etc?

Exactly that. You select your club before (or after) you take your shot, and add any penalties, and it works everything out for you. YOu get front middle and back yardages. Only downside is on the watch I don't think you get distances to hazards so you would need to check your phone for that
