Hi, I have recently started to play golf and I am struggling to find good set of clubs to buy. The only set I can find is a Wilson set from Argos £200 but I'm not sure if it is any good. I don't really want to spend a huge amount as it will be my first set.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Don welcome, please dont buy one of these set ups that have what they all"everything you need to start playing golf"do your homework first.Read some magazines and get a few ides, then try and pick up some gear off hear or ebay or carboots, you can pick a lot of gear up cheap from these places that will get you off to a great start.

There are a number of options. Look in the local paper or local ad paper (Thames Valley Trader etc) as there are usually some bargains to be had there. You could try golfbidder (bit pricey) who usually have a pretty wide choice or even e-bay but beware of fakes.

Alternatively see what your local pro or golf store (AG etc) has in their 2nd hand selection.

I think the answer to this lies in how long you've been playing. The first club should be a 7 iron. Keep hitting it. When you've had enough of hitting it - hit it some more. Then, when you really can't stand hitting it any more - keep hitting it.

Once you've got what you consider to be 'your' swing, then you can start purchasing other clubs to compliment your set.

Sorry.

I have only played 3 or 4 times but I really enjoy it. I'm 24 so Ive got plenty of years practice ahead of me :)

Thanks for the advice guys I'll take my time and look for something decent

My advice is to go see a local PGA Pro, ask about second hand clubs. You can get some seriously good kit at a bargain price in the second hand market. And, you should get some good advice from the Pro too.

Arrrgh!
Whenever this question pops up, I hear the same advice, 'get some second hand-ebay-local pro etc.'
But being in the same situation as other beginner golfers a couple of years ago, and not having many golfing friends I would have found that advice to be useless, i wouldn't have had the nerve to go the second hand route.
I went out and bought a brand new full set of Bay hill clubs and don't regret it. They were not the greatest but they did the job.
The primary point here is a full starter set of brand new clubs gives you confidence to just get on and play.
Now I would ignore the advice of getting second hand stuff, and get either a Wilson beginner set, or if you can't reach the £200 mark, either a Hippo or a Ram set for around the £120-130 mark.
Once your confident and enjoying your game of golf and want to pick it up for the long term, then you can look at getting big name branded stuff that's custom fit.
