Probably one for @Oops! as they are based in Germany :)

Just watched a clip on Instagram of a German visiting CashForeClubs to get his first set of clubs and he said he had done some lessons as part of his licence (something beginning with P) and he said you had to do this to become a member at most clubs in Germany. Was wondering what this licence involved and whether people on here thinks it would be a good idea for new golfers in this country.

"To play golf in Germany, you need a license called "Platzreife" (course permit) or Platzerlaubnis. This license requires both a theoretical test on rules and etiquette, and a practical test where you demonstrate your skills and complete a set number of holes with a maximum score. The "Platzreife" ensures players have the necessary skills, etiquette, and knowledge of safety to play without being a danger or disruption to others"

Taken from Google ^^^^^^^^^

I can not see clubs wanting to do this. It is a barrier to potential members and most clubs need the money. It sounds great if you are one of those on the inside. Not so tempting to try golf out if you are on the outside.

I've been saying that we need something like this for more than 25 years....
Would you go and play any other game/sport without knowing the basic rules or how to behave whilst playing it?
In simple terms...No you wouldn't
If only for the last line of LT'S quote... ensures players have the necessary skills, etiquette and knowledge of safety to play without being a danger or disruption to others.
I'm indebted to the older guys who taught me when I first started....

@Lord Tyrion : Google has is right ! Probably it‘s a „German thing“ :
Everything has to be properly ‘regulated,’ otherwise it's not right! 😁
And with the „Platzreife“ You automatically have a Handicap of 54.

It has its advantages and disadvantages. However, I don't think you can force people to engage with a subject in this way if they don't want to.

When I first started playing golf - a long, long time ago (more than 30 years!) - there was no such thing as a “Platzreife”! Instead, a city employee (!) stood guard at the entrance like Cerberus, looked deeply into the eyes of everyone who wanted to enter the course, and then decided who, in his opinion (!), could be trusted to behave correctly and appropriately on the course, and either let the “applicants” pass or turned them away – with no “right of appeal”! 🤷🏽

And it worked perfectly! The millionaire's wife played with the student, the office worker, and the craftsman, without any airs and graces or even a hint of arrogance ! 👍

Unfortunately, that has also changed (there). 🙁

That's why I now prefer to play elsewhere. 🤷🏽

I'm not sure that stands up to too much scrutiny. I could join a squash, tennis, badminton club tomorrow and no one will test me knowledge of the sport. Same with team sports, football, rugby, cricket etc. Spread it across all sports, how many test you before you play?

You would hope people would have an idea of how the game works, whichever one, but few will know them in depth. As pundits on tv often prove, even those who have played the game for years don't always know the rules that well.

I don't see golf as the wild west that many seem to see it as.
