Golf in the rain - what do we think?

Having already seen the forecast I've scratched playing this weekend including the stableford on Sunday. I'm just getting over that virus going around and so not mad keen to go out in the wind and rain.

I plan to go to the range tomorrow morning to hit a few balls and work on my longer game as the weather suggest the best weather will be tomorrow.

I want to then go out and work on my chipping and putting tomorrow AM if the weather holds. Will see how strong the winds are and how heavy the rain is lashing on Sunday but want to try and work on my approach shots from <100 yards.

you've shamed me into it! just leaving work, if I can still see the course when I arrive I'll try out my new waterproof overtrousers - Tog24 from Mountain Warehouse!

Good luck Viscount17

I dont work Fridays so been out and played 9 holes, I played OK decided not to score in an attempt to just go out and have some fun and it worked! Will be doing the same next week.

Anyway back to post, Yes I will play in the rain. It just takes time to prepare i.e. Putting spare gloves in sandwich bags etc

Arghhh my course is closed today and the temp is not due to get above 3degrees in central Scotland within next 24hrs. Does not look hopeful for tomorrow.

On the w/proof jacket front, my Calvin Green jacket is black and white and its not too bad to keep clean. Also machine washable which helps.

I will play in any weather too, played on when it started snowing lightly once, not much fun trying to find your ball, and a total bugger when putting the ball was the size of a tennis ball by the time it got near the hole. ;)

I have new waterproofs to try out so will be playing tomorrow no matter what.

It has lashed down here all morning and now turning to snow. Even mr B has stayed in and I'm thinking retail therapy tomorrow.
Bad news all round. Apart from desire to swing a club, if I don't get a few rounds in each week, how am I to avoid writer's bottom from sitting at PC all day?

As golfers in Ireland and Britain poor weather is an occupational hazard. You have got to be prepared to play in rain, cold, sunshine and whatever the weather god throws at us-usually all in the one day.

I once played at Royal Portrush in full raingear. The rain was so bad it was bouncing off the fairway back up the inside of my trooser legs! Ye canny win!

Well, feel ive let the side down a bit as I bottled it in the end. i managed to talk myself out of it and convinced myself I had more pressing matters i should be using the time to address.

Typical isn't it- not a cloud in the sky here this morning(Saturday), sun blazing down etc but not allowed on the course until a rather pathetic 3.30pm as I'm a five dayer. In other words- don't turn up at the weekend until april 1st.

Ive really enjoyed looking through the responses to this thread drawn , as they were, from golfers all over the place. it's nice to have a virtual 19th hole eh?

Medwayjohn- yep , i'm on Thanet roughly once a month so i'll PM you the next time i'm off there. The missus and I are both novices though so we may not be any good as companions( at our standard it's more like watching an episode of TimeTeam or David Bellamy at work rather than The Masters). If that's the case then I quite understand.

cheers all and good luck out there today,

bill

As long as I don't need floats on my trolley I'll play in it! In a weekly Stableford last year my partner and I played on through stair-rods only to find out in the clubhouse that we were the only two daft buggers to finish and the comp had been cancelled so we didn't even get 1st and 2nd prizes. That can't be right, can it?

that would pis me off to say the least!

htl, as I drove toward the course, the rain stopped, the clouds pulled back and it finished as a pretty decent afternoon - weatherwise.
The golf however was b______ awful. Every tee is a temporary and we have one temporary green. The ground was sodden, well should have expected that with all the lakes, and you could wash your ball in the holes.
Couldn't hit off the mats for trying. They're matting on concrete bases and I kept pulling out for fear of smashing a club.
We had temporaries last winter but nothing like as many and in better condition.
