Golf in the Olympics!

No, no, no. Stupid decision, as was tennis. Agree with others - should be amateur only. How are they going to arrange and justify Tiger's appearance fee, on the assumption that he is interested?

I didn't agree with it for tennis, which is probably the most comparable sport to ours, what with it's Majors and all, so I guess I should be saying no for golf, too. I always thought of the Olympics as being the pinnacle of "amateur" sport but since track and field went pro I guess it hasn't been that way for some time now.

I am another one who is totally against this. Stupid decision in so many ways , the money men have won again.

Ridiculous

I certainly wont be watching and will have no interest whatsoever in who gets the medals

I do not like to see professional soccer, tennis, golf or any of the "big" professional sports at the Olympics.
Athletics also should return to its amateur roots.

As I have said before the olympics need to be at the pinnacle of the represented sport, in golf it has no chance the majors will always rank higher, this is why it should be an Amatuer event imo

Some very negative posts on this.

Just to play devil's advocate,

don't people think that this is great for this sport of ours that we all love, that it manages to reach to all 4 corners of the world and bring people from a huge host of countries together to compete.

and that for every 4 years players can play alongside each other and it doesn't matter where they are from or what tour they play on?

I'm all for it :)

It can only serve to get more people watching the sport, and then participating - at any level. Is that not what the olympics are all about? It's not been an amateur contest for a long time now (football, tennis, athletics, cycling, even the bmxers are pro athletes nowadays!).

It might actually make some people realise that golf can be a sport as well as a past-time! And it might just help get more young talent into the sport, which in the longrun, can only be a good thing.

It would be great if it mattered to the people playing - I dont beleive it will to the pros it should be amateurs

Sticks head above parapet for first post - I love golf as much as the next man, but this is a bad idea.

Does golf comply with the Olympic ideal of "Swifter, Higher, Stronger"? Naah.
Will the Olympics mess up the established golf calendar? Oh yes, what with the qualifying tournaments, practice rounds and actual event.
And how will golf actually benefit from this alliance? Exposure will be the stock answer, to which I reply "Bollards". There cannot be anyone left on this earth who isn't aware of the game of golf by now.
Anyone else detect the smell of brown envelopes stuffed with non sequential used ones?

Mixed feelings here.

On one hand, golf is an excellent inclusion to the olympic games, however, it surely must be an AMATEUR event?!?!?

With a packed tour schedule on all pro tours, i can't see how this is a positive step for the pro game. Can't imagine Poulter altering his schedule if he has a holiday booked that week ... ;)

TomC,

Haven't they already said it'll probably be limited to 15 countries who qualify? That's considerably less than the nationalities represented on your average European Tour event, never mind such truly international events as the Open.

Don't know what they're trying to achieve here. The IOC is universally regarded as a corrupt organisation which the main golfing organisations should steer well clear of for fear of contamination.

Surely it'l just be the chopper Pro's that will be competing tho....the 'real'Pro's will be gearing up for USPGA and chasing Ryder Cup points not playing in this mickey mouse event.

I think it's time the IOC welcomed every single sport, extended the event to eight months long and introdcued medals for everyone taking part because that's what matters.

Hi,
As far as i know Tiger and Harrington have both said they will play in it if elligable there will be no prize money and boxing is about the only amature event left in the olympics that has a professional side almost all sports people in the olympics are Pros so why not golf.
