Golf in Scotland

Evening all,

Myself and a few mates are coming north of the border to sample the delights of Scottish golf courses and hospitality.

Blairgowrie, Banchory, Ballater and Edzell are our intended courses. If any of you would be kind enough to let me know your opinion of them and any advice you have on playing them, it would be appreciated please.

I have been looking at couses to play in Scotland too and tried to look at those just north of Inverness. I loved Strathpeffer last year and was looking at Royal Dornoch,Tain, Alness and Muir of Ord. One of these would finish off the holiday after playing on the Outer Hebrides. I was surprised when i visited the Alness website and found it had been removed on the orders of the Alness committee -why? What has happened?
 
Ballater was my homeclub for several years until recently, bit short perhaps but a decent course, first 6 are hardest, no particular advice on it, play it as you see it. It is very scenic, good friendly place. Easy walk as it's flat. Greens are pretty good. Keep the ball in play off the tee by leaving driver in bag often helps.

Banchory I've played 8 or 10 times, interesting if a bit short too. Some great par 3's. It is not a course for a slicer as OOB is all right, like the Old course you can go left all day long!!

Blairgowrie rosemount I played once in winter with some other GM forummers and although we didn't get the course anything like its best it was very enjoyable and a very classy layout. Would head back there in an instant!

Don't know Edzell except it has a good reputation.

Edzell and Blairgowrie are both beautiful tracks. Don't know much about the other two to be honest. Consider Kirriemuir, Kingussie, Newtonmore, Boat of Garten, or Spey Valley.
 
I wasn't mad about Banchory, I played 36 holes there, but it just didn't have a wow factor to it. Generally flat. I prefered Stonehaven (slightly) as some great scenery and 6-7 great holes, although some of the rest are just ok. I hear Aboyne is nice but haven't played it.

Edzell is a solid 7/10 course and was quite good, although the farrways are sometimes too wide, so probably better for mid-high handicappers, but wouldn't say a hard challenge for low handicappers. The wind can get up though.

I haven't played the others.
 
Guys, thank you all for your responses. We are intending to head up 10th June and start back southwards 13th. It is my first time with this group and they are a good bunch. They have sorted out meeting up with some Scottish lads they have played with before, so really looking forward to it.

I will pass on the additional courses recommended by yourselves, and thanks again for your help.

Not sure I would come all that way to play Alness or Muir of Ord. not with the likes of the two Dornoch courses, Brora, Golspie Tain, Nairn and Fortrose close by. Even Bonar Bridge and tarbert are better and only 9 holes. Don't get me wrong Muir is a nice course, but why come to and area famous for its Links courses and play parkland?

I'm up that way in Feb, so hoping to get a round at Boat of Garten over that weekend. Course looks nice on the web. Is it good?

by all means come though for a game at Nairn, but it will still be on the winter course untill the end of March.


When GM had a forum meet at Castle Stuart 2 years ago a few of us played Spey Valley on the friday and the snow only went the tuesday of that week and that was the end of March.

The only real test in winter up here is Brora, which tends not to suffer with the bad weather too much and most of the winter tee's are further back than the whites's, so its longer :)

I've run it by my wife - offered her some spa treatments at a nearby hotel... :-)

We are up there from Friday 10th Feb to Sunday 12th. I'd be looking to play hopefully on the Saturday, do-able?

Dependent on my wife getting in (there is only so much coffee she can drink!!!)

Are you going to the Macdonald Highland Resort?

Sunday is better for me for Nairn as i'm playing in the Holy Moley Trophy on Saturday morning, which is our winter cup.

Let me know nearer the time what your arrangements are and i'll rey and sort something out.
