Ok guys (Alib and any other ladies).

As you may be aware by now I have been challenged by the guys at GM to a match at Royal Ascot. It was supposed to be a game with my regular Saturday morning partners but one has had to drop out for business reasons.

One of the guys wants to bring his son along (he is a member) for a father/son combo. His lad plays of 14 but hasn't picked up a club in ages. I am tempted as this would be a good team and in my mind is what these challenge games are for.

Lots of you have suggested opening the spot to a forum member. I am happy to consider that but you would need to be available on 27th March and be able to get to Royal Ascot. Depending on the numbers available and any comments made it is a viable option.

I was also thinking of asking one of my other partners (but who doesn't play in our Saturday group). I have several in mind who have done me favours over the year (the guy who was captain the year I joined so effectively got me in, an old friend I've played with for years etc).

The other option (the pro was up for it but reading your comments he is binned and not in contention) was to ask one of our better players to make it more competitive (some of our guys are high handicappers).

I open it up to a poll below. Let me know what you REALLY want to see and we'll see where it goes from there.

Went for forum member as well. Adds a bit more interest to the article when it involves putting names to faces.

Problem is apart from you guys on here I have no idea who actually reads the magazine, certainly within the hallowed walls of Royal Ascot. I've seen guys flicking through it from time to time but I've no idea if they buy it themselves or are just killing time between rounds/waiting for partners etc.

I guess if people go for the forum member it sort of covers that angle. I have to say I am split 50/50 between giving my mates son a chance (nice lad) or opening up to won lucky person from here.

As I said in a previous post it is the X factor for forum readers (without the premium rate phone call)

I would love to play but I can’t get Thursdays off, don’t know why but my boss just does not seem to understand.

I would pick a forum member mate, also gives you some practise before our Surrey meet.

Will PM some people regarding our meet in coming week.

This is a toughie. I've gone for the forum member (maybe a low handicapper so you can cover two issues in one?) but I don't envy you the choice. Someone is going to be disappointed and your selection (old captain for example) might put someone's (the current captain?) nose out of joint.

If the lad hasn't played in a while you might want him to play a round or two to see if it's still there?

I've gone for the lad. His Dad will be so proud, a moment that will stay with them forever. Also bragging rights to his mates being in the magazine and affirm a life long love with this great game of ours.

I don't really mind who, as lnog as they read the magazine. I voted for the guys son though, as I should think he'd get the most out of it.

It's your call - good of you to offer to the Forum, but isn't this meant to be 'your' team - people you regularly play with? - and picking just one forum member might be hard - different if the forum could field a whole team.
I've gone for 'old friend' though you could include the young guy in that. Nice idea to play him, but would he be a bit of a loose cannon?

OK everyone,

As it seems to be a straight decision between my mates son and picking a forum member, I need to know who on here would be available on the 27th.

I think the easiest thing to do and so I don't miss out anyone who is interested is to suggest that if you want to be considered please PM me.

I can also offer a practice round at Royal Ascot either this weekend, next Thursday (day before Good Friday) or the Tuesday after Easter (2 days before the match). A green fee with a member will be approximately £30.

I'll continue to monitor the board. At the moment most of the comments favour playing the youngster but the voting is for a forum member.

You guys never make it easy

Bottom line is it's your choice but I think that the forum members would like to hear about people from this forum, see their pictures playing, not people we've never heard of, no disrespect to them. The magazine feature will not hold much interest for us if the people playing aren't characters we know from here.
In Scotland Madandra could have taken 3 of his pals to play at St Andrews against GM but he opted to take 3 forum members instead, 2 of whom he'd never met......what a very nice man!
I'm sure the NI guys are planning a forum members only match too.
No pressure then!

Homer, I shall be playing in Spain at the time of your challenge so must be excluded. So the very best of luck and make us proud.
There I've made selection easier, :p
