Going to The British Open?

Is anyone on here aiming to go to Muirfield this July for the big one? I am and i'm just looking at the best place to stay for a few days. I don't mind camping if needs be but I can't find many campsites around the area. I suppose I could stay in Edinburgh and just get the train there and back each day.

I went to Sandwich in 2011 which was sensational until the abysmal weather on the Saturday and as we were camping, I think it took me 3 weeks to recover and return to a normal temperature. I'm hoping Scotland to be kinder, ambitious I know.

Yup, got tickets for Sunday. I'm staying in Edinburgh and will be getting the train to Muirfield. Scotrail are doing a combined train/bus ticket that gets you right to course.

Re: Going to The British Open?

scorecard carrying again this year, was very difficult to find a place within 20 miles that wasn't hugely expensive for the week.
luckily found one 10 miles away for a steal, so all good and looking forward to it :D

How does one get involved in that? I'd be keen to do that one year.

Going to the last practice day (Wednesday) best day of the week, you see everybody, crowds are good but not huge, players are relaxed and have banter with the crowd, never played Muirfield so I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Yellowcraigs camp site is about a mile from the course. Beautiful spot, I think they charge a lot on Open week, probably booked up.
Lots of good camp sites at North Berwick, Gilsland is up by the Glen course. Another camp site at Aberlady.
Generally I would advise going to any Open in Scotland by Train/Bus link. Nearest train station to Muirfield is Drem [about 2 miles]. So an Edinburgh base would be OK if you go in by train.
Travelling by car to Muirfield is not great. Best if you come in from the North Berwick direction.

Cheers for this. Found a campsite by Glen course for £27.50 a night. It's 5 miles from Muirfield so that's not bad at all.

Well done.
Make sure you take the bus when you travel from NB.
It passes the entrance to the course
Getting into bars and restaurants that week in Gullane, Dirleton and NB is nearly impossible.
Big Tescos not far from Campsite.

Brilliant, as long as there's a supermarket to get some beers then that's fine by me. I'll sit in my tent with a scotch egg and an ale. :)

Re: Going to The British Open?

Ok, just read this thread whilst googling about places near muirfield (namely dirleton where I'm staying as I'm curious about it) and I know for a fact there is still tent pitches going on where I'm staying which is about 30 mins walk from muirfield, contact details of the farmer are-

Bob Simpson
castlemains farm
Dirleton
east lothian

Tel-01620 850224

Theres 2 pubs in this tiny beautiful village and you'd do well to be getting a tent pitch there as its 1.3 miles from muirfield. Also it's a steal at £20 per night!!!!!! Be quick to book!!!

(we're there all week from the Monday with a season pass and playing gullane course 2 on the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the week from heaven!)

Ps- the farmer is a lovely guy to speak to as well, you'll probably get the answer phone but his son will return your call as Bob is on holiday right now. (I'd give his mobile number but as I said before he's on holiday and probably doesn't want some giddy golfer bothering him at the mo lol)

Probably spending all the cash that he has made from turning a field into a campsite! :)

Re: Going to The British Open?

The pedant within is shouting that the Tournament you refer to, is correctly titled as "The Open" or "The Open Championship"

Either way, I hope you have a great time :)
