Don't know if I'm sounding bad here...
I'm just trying to say if a compass is banned then so should a strokesaver with a compass printed on it. They give the same info in my opinion.
So I suppose I'm thinking why is a compass banned???
I couldn't make one be useful to me... No intention to use one either. Pointless topic maybe??
Don't think you sound bad at all, and stopping to think about it I can understand the point you are making - the compass and the compass illustration should be telling you the same thing and unless I'm being thick or missing something obvious, I can't really see how a compass could give you any more or less info than a correctly aligned illustration of a compass - yet one is banned, while the other isn't.
I've asked my Rules contacts at The R&A to clarify if possible, but they're pretty busy right now getting ready for some big golf event (!) so it may be a little while before they get back to me

My tadger only ever points South these days. Never North.
So I know where South is.
I sometimes get an inkling where East or West is. God, one day last week I even got to East Nor East, but it didn't last long.

I don't really see what benefit a compass is going to give you - it's pretty straight-forward working out which way the wind is blowing.....

Yep, Clarks Commandos, I had a pair back in the late 70's. I actually wanted DM's but me mum insisted I had "fitted" shoes, and only Clarks would do....

Surely, if the wind is directly behind you and it is a westerly wind, SOUTH is 90 degress to the right not NORTH

Following a brief conversation with those is the know, here is my understanding of the reasons for the difference between an actual compass and an illustration ...
The information recorded in paper form prior to the round is not a breach of Rule 14-3. It is like taking slope readings on greens with a spirit level during practice and writing down the measurements and then referring to them during the competition, which is again okay.
