GI clubs are they bad for you?

I hack around with blades that were given to me, tbh I hate them, the ones that come out the middle are sublime with an amazing amount of feel even for an old set, but those are few and far between, if I get it even slightly wrong it ends up being a 30yard shank, which is why I want to get some proper GI's, to be honest I don't really care how they look if it's going to improve my game I'll use them

Hitting a shank isn't going to be cured by using GI clubs.

Why do people think like this?

Yeah I know they do not all blades I never said they did, but I'm sure don't use game improvement irons. They will use irons with the blade appearance but that also offer a slight cavity to give more consistency, things like the TM Muscle Cavity or the Mizuno MP 59 and MP 63. Hardly what you would call game improvement irons are they?

Steve Stricker - AP2
Matteo Manassero - AP2
Dustin Johnson -R9TP
Edoardo Molinari - R9TP
Jason Day - R9TP
Freddie Jacobsen - Diablo
Trevor Immelman - Razr X Tour.

That's from 5 minutes searching manufacturers wbsites - Ping don't show who plays what but we know Lee uses i10's
Plenty use what we could consider GI irons as opposed to SGI irons like G20........

Practising with bladed clubs gives good feedback on off centre hits. I like that. What ever club we decide to use we should be trying to hit out of the sweetspot, off centre hits may feel better with Gi clubs but the ballflight will still suffer.

That is a fair point and the only real way to improve is lessons, but the chances are reduced by GI's (or at least I think they are) my point is it's much easier to hit a shank on a blade with a sweetspot the size of a pinhead than a GI that is oversize and has a cavity to get the ball in the air

dont get me wrong i see what your both saying, and your list is interesting.

but they are all the more refined cavity back clubs, AP2 rather than AP1, R9TP rather than R9 and Razr X tour rather than big berthas which are as thick as they are tall.

so i think your both saying the same thing but defining GI slightly differently.

i would agree ive a set of mp52 irons, small pocket cavity3456 and solid style 789pw plenty of pros have used similar but im not sure that they or any of the above really can be called SGI or GI more of a new generation players CB.

The size of the sweet spot is still the same so your point is rubbish. Shanking the ball has nothing to do with the sweet spot and it's not the sweet spot that is oversized it is the actual blade size on he cavity back that is bigger.

Agreed a shank is a shank no matter if its a SGI, GI or a Blade, for a good ball striker any iron should be easily hit out of the sweet spot.

Last night I was hitting a Titleist 712 CB 6 Iron and MB Pw and was hitting them both out of the sweetspot. But TBH i would not like to play with them all the time as there are days when i would look for a bit more forgiveness.

My pro was in a discussion one night at our place and said that he believed that if a child was taught with blades he would become a better golfer as he got older because he would be taught how to swing correctly from the start.

He would not advise doing so though as it would take alot of patience that kids today would not have when their peers would be hitting better shots with their SGI irons, but when my pro was a kid it was pretty much the only available option.

I think what has happened here is people have different ideas on what defines a game improvement iron. I think clubs are split into 3 categories. GI, Better Player and blades. GI are designed to give max forgiveness, better player give a balance between forgiveness and workabiblity and blades obviously max workability. For example this is how I would categorize clubs using the latest range from these manafacturers.
PingTMMizzy
G15BurnerJPZ800GI
i15TP MC/CBMP 59/63Better
Player
S56TP MBMP 69Blades

I think what you see is Tour players will use the better players irons as they are happy to give away some of the workability but on the other hand they are not going to loose distance on slight mishits.

I've always said this, as has any pro I've ever talked to about teaching my 5 yr old, who also picks up daddys Titleist 907 D2 with Graffaloy red stiff and hits it about 20 yds much to my amusement, he then uses the clubs like a snooker cue so we've a long way to go..............:)
