Since I got the golfshot app for my phone I've kept track off all my stats on it for the last 10 rounds. It's made some interesting reading as parts of my game that I thought were poor are actually better than my handicap average according to the app.

So heres my stats and was wondering if anyone else uses anything similar to keep track as it could be intresting to read the different stats for different handicaps.

FIR 40.5% Missed left 18.2%. Missed right 41.3%

GIR 17%

Scrambling 9.1%

Sand saves 10%

Putts per green 1.89

Putts per GIR 2.22

Average score par 3, 4.3
Average score par 4, 5.5
Average score par 5, 6.9

I havent kept stats for ages, but when I did the most telling to me was GIR. Of course, based over a number of rounds not one or two. If I hit 12 GIRs I was shooting level or close to it.

Trouble with stats is they dont show the whole story. You can have some great stats for a round but that 13 kills your score!

Stats are a useful guide and sometimes can be suprising, but they are only a reflection of what happened. Using them to focus your practice on is what counts.

Snap analysis - crap.

I use MyCaddie on the IPhone and use the stats to focus on my problem holes and approach my 'good' holes and view them as birdie chances. I find it good for focussing my practice. Poor FIR and the driver gets a work out on the range. Poor GIR and my irons get worked. High putting average and the wee stick gets attention (fnar fnar)

I keep my own stats on Excel purely as a way of seeing whether I am improving in certain areas, aswell as keeping a track of all my scores. As Mongoose says the stats do not tell the whole story , especially with the very basic stats that I keep, but they can make interesting reading.

The most interesting thing I found after doing a little study of which stats most affected my scores was that Fairways hit (which I thought was the key to whether I scored well or not) had virtually no effect on how well I scored, and GIR had only a small effect. The biggest by far was putts per round which was virtually directly in line with how well I scored. (obviously this goes back to the point about the stats not telling the whole story though as when you are hitting the ball well and chipping the ball well, you are going to have shorter putts more often, leading to more putts made...)

My stats for 2011 so far look like this:

Average score over par: 6.72
Fairways hit: 57%
Greens in regulation: 55%
Putts per round: 32.62
Putts per G.I.R: 1.99

Eagles per round: 0.09
Birdies per round: 1.62
Pars per round: 9.33
Bogeys per round: 5.55
Double Bogeys per round: 1.34
Triple Bogeys or others per round: 0.07

I've got every round I've played since 1996 which is over 2,400 now on an EXCEL program. It does help me analyse certain holes.

For this year, I've been tracking every shot in terms of club, situation and result- good, quality miss or bad.

I need to get out more (to play more golf)

Here's some of mine...

All year.....

Fairways hit - 41%
GIR - 36%
Putts per Round - 31.04
Putts per Green - 1.72
Putts per GIR - 1.93
Putts per green missed - 1.61
1 putts - 5.75 per round
2 putts - 11.25
3 putts - 1

Par Scrambles - 203 from 508 chances = 40%

Birdies per round - 1.3
Pars - 8.3
Bogeys - 6.3
Doubles - 1.7
Triples+ - 0.4

Stroke Average - 79.71

This month.....

Fairways hit - 40%
GIR - 40%
Putts per Round - 30.17
Putts per Green - 1.68
Putts per GIR - 1.93
Putts per green missed - 1.51
1 putts - 6.83 per round
2 putts - 9.83
3 putts - 1.33

Par Scrambles - 28 from 54 chances = 52%

Birdies per round - 1.7
Pars - 9.5
Bogeys - 5
Doubles - 1.7
Triples+ - 0.2

Stroke Average - 76.2

So I'm playing reasonably well at the moment........ :D :D

Here are my last 10 rounds

Key stats for Martin Bedborough (Hcap: 14)

Fairways Hit: 42% (Hcap Std: 15)
Greens In Reg: 31% (Hcap Std: 10)
Putts Per Round: 34.27 (Hcap Std: 17)
Sand Saves: 17% (Hcap Std: 10)
Birdie Conversion: 10% (Hcap Std: 22)
Par Scrambles: 13% (Hcap Std: 22)
Penalties Per Round: 1.27 (Hcap Std: 13)

Too many putts and not good enough in the short game area. The first is a bit of a surprise but the short game issues remain although we are taking baby steps forward

Last 10 rounds. Spot the (apparent) weak link!

Fairways Hit: 38%
Greens In Reg: 49%
Putts Per Round: 31.80
Sand Saves: 57%
Birdie Conversion: 20%
Par Scrambles: 35%
Penalties Per Round: 0.65

I don't keep stats as such but i do go over the round I've just played in my head to see hoe many FIR's GIR"s Putts etc. Also where did I leak shots, was it wrong decision or club .

Looking at the FIR's you guys are hitting I could feel very inadequate as my percentage would be low 20's some days but then I know our fairways are very tight and even if I've missed it by six inches it's still a miss.So are stats misleading?

For me the only stat that counts is my handicap.

Given that

I use the free golfshot app to record my scores and stats bit they are so embarrassing you lot are not going to see them! The strange thing is when also using the golfplan app to recommend training etc it tells me sand play every time even though this is actually one of my strongest areas and rarely take more than one shot to get out! Obv not all the time!

I have to be honest and say I get quite strict on myself with FIR and GIR. On the fringe of either and I count it as a miss. I'm not sure why the putting has gone south apart from playing a lot of quicker (and frankly better) greens like Blackmoor, Camberley and St Pierre and not getting use to thepace again. I don't think swapping to a different putter for the quicker greens helped
