Gerrard retires

+1 - again!

I'm not JT's greatest fan - as a person - either, but he had/has a much better sense of duty to club (if perhaps not country) imo!

are you referring to Rio Ferdinand missing the drugs test? That's the ony real think I can think he's done.
Dont want to go too off track, but I'd suggest accusations of racism, adultery and accusation of being a thug in his youth are worse than that of Ferdinand?

ability wise, bith different players of course. But I'd say rio when at his peak was far more accomplished.

That certainly coloured (sic) my view, but there's more. I've never really been a great fan of his play either, but that's just my opinion.

And yes, JT's youth wasn't great. Met him a couple of times through Golf where he's much more 'relaxed' and he's quite 'normal' for a footballer!

I meet JT once at a kids party and fair play to him he seemed nice enough. I've no dislike for the bloke. Would take rio over him but think England were very lucky to have to quality CBS for a large period of time. Just think rio is no worse than any others.

The correct decision for both parties i feel.

He has always turned out for England when at times he's not been 100% fit for club so i think some of the criticism is a bit harsh.

His performances for England haven't been the same as some of his wonderful performances we've seen from him in a red shirt.

There have been plenty of occasions where's he's missed midweek and made a Saturday game. He's not the only one. And it improved as he got a but older (Liverpools 'decline') maybe playing a part. He's undoubtably a Liverpool legend, for England he's just another of the golden generation who failed.

Well he's in good company then!!

Fully agree! Only really Rooney left who was a part of it.
Then we can build of and knock down a whole new generation!

Get rid of that manager and hopefully you'll see some sort of improvement.

That said, are the next generation actually good enough?

I don't think so.

Clearly he thinks the time is right and to be fair, he has always given much in an England shirt. He's not been great at times but I don't think anyone can truthfully question his pride and passion for playing for England. I think it's a good decision to prolong his career and play CL football and a long PL campaign without the added pressures of a Euro 2016 campaign and any number of friendlies

Great news and glad he has finally retired - wish he had done it a while back. Now he can concentrate on being ready each weekend and midweek for his club

H R , cant be any worse

Indeed, there would be nobody worse as an England Manager than HR - and I'm an HR fan!

Great wheeler/dealer/spiv! But that's not what an England manager is all about!

Current one is pretty much perfect imo! And that's irrespective of the FA 'don't rock the boat' requirement!

I was the same years ago , Brain Clough should have got the England job but no they played safe and gave it to Don Revie , as for Stevie G , great player for Liverpool but not the same for England , his not partnership with Lampard was never one that worked

I disagree a touch. I thought Gerrard always played better than Lampard and I thought was unlucky to be the one to be moved around as often to accommodate two players that were too similar

It might be just me, but the idea of retiring from playing for your country irks somewhat. You retire when you are no longer picked. Opting out is rubbish. If your country needs you, you go. If it doesn't, you have retired. It's not like there are loads of games to play anyway. Another two or three games a season is hardly going to tire him out, and he probably wouldn't have played the full 90 minutes either.

A bit of pride creeps in no doubt, rather than getting the phone call saying 'I'm leaving you out of this one', they retire first so its not embarrassing to them, which it shouldn't be, you can't go on forever at the same level.
