So another of the golden generation has gone. Can't say I agree with it though. Claims in one moment that being made England captain fulfilled his childhood dreams and yet is packing it in?

He's always given his all when he turned up, but feel beckhams record would easily have been broken of it wasn't for Gerrards a likeness to Giggs when friendlies were contested.

Obviously he thinks Liverpool are back in contention for the league and wants to be at full tilt for that. Interesting to see that Rodgers got a big mention too. Glad to see that someone who isn't English had a major influence on the England captain.

I'd say thanks for the effort Steve, but now time to move on. Let's get shot of anyone who won't be around in four years time and let the youngsters actually have a go.

To be fair papas he was made a bit of a scapegoat at the World Cup and there ain't still many better then him who is English! Person to take over is Wiltshire who is being a bit of a tit at mo and Barkley! But to say they are in his league is a bit ott at mo. I agree onwards and upwards but there ain't many good English players about at this time.

By the way he played in the world cup I thought he'd retired a couple of months ago.

be dum tish, I'm here all week......

Jumped before he was pushed really, clearly no longer up to it at international level from the evidence of the world cup, and to be honest I'd say he's never really lived up to his potential on an international stage. But then again who has for England in the last 2 decades?

Is it me, or is that a contradictory post? You start of saying you don't agree with him going, then finish with thanks, time for him to go. I'm probably reading it wrong though!

I would have liked to see him play for the next 12 months, just due to the lack of experience in the squad, even if he was only coming on for the last 30 minutes, as having him around may help the next generation!

Can completely see why he has gone though, one last big season for Liverpool is my guess!

I agree with you that he's underperformed although has spent most of his time out of position. I just don't see why he needed to retire. If he wasn't selected for next game he could just praise the youngsters (like cole). Instead any player replacing him now is doing by default. Seems a bit about his ego and that he's prioritising Liverpool (which is his choice). Just find it hard how players can say playing for England is the pinnacle and then turning their back on it.

sandmagnet, I agree cover doesn't look too great just yet. But gotta give it a go soon enough.

i did think I'd kinda gone full circle. Basically what I'm saying is that I don't think players should retire from intl duty. Bit if he hadn't retired doesn't mean he should have been picked.

A bit like Carragher and scholes to name two. Both retired in a strop IMO. Carragher came back when he knew he'd get a game then jumped ship straight after.

Players can't say playing for England is best feeling ever then turn back on it.

The right time IMO. Was probably our worst performer during the whole campaign in a side that included Danny Welbeck.

Probably realised he was off the pace in the 2 games he played and decided that he wasn't world class anymore. Has been a good servant for his country, just a shame he couldn't of went out on a better note.

With one last push for his club, I think the same content of your post will be the same for the coming season :smirk:

Basically they are lying when they say that. They get paid an absolute shed load of money for playing for their club, and anyone playing for England now kind of knows it's a thankless task as they ain't going to win anything soon.

I'm sure it's great playing for your country when you are a good team and are loved by the nation. But playing for England now, especially for players who are in the champions league and are surrounded at their clubs by very good foreign players, is I suspect, not that high on their list of fun things to do.

He's been decent for England but that's about it. It's a shame he & Lampard couldn't do for country what they've done for their clubs.
As for him being in contention for the league, not a chance,he blew his chance last season.

Ferdinand never had any dignity in any form in the first place

Certainly agree with that!

Gerrards retirement from England duties was entirely predictable - nothing to work for on that front this year and plenty from a Club point of view!

A pretty good time to 'rebuild' the entire England team imo.

thought he had done this before the world cup,oh sorry it just seemed like he had,to slow and to old for the new ENGLAND set up,one more season at the top before he retires to the boot room .

I thought they mostly had, and they were still woeful and stunk the place out?

Hmmm, club allegiance playing it's part there.

Nope, didn't have that either IMO, only did what HE wanted to do, and still does, club stood by him and he threw it in red noses face a couple of times.

Really, really dislike the bloke as a person and 'footballer' (loose term)

+1 - again!

I'm not JT's greatest fan - as a person - either, but he had/has a much better sense of duty to club (if perhaps not country) imo!

i meant ant your allegiance to Chelsea.

Terry v ferdinand is like lampard v Gerrard. With fans supporting their player.

I would suggest ferdinands discretions have been less been less significant than many if his counterparts. And IMO to question his footballing ability is bordering absurd. At his peak he was the best English cb but a county mile!
