Guys, anyone got, or had a look at, the Garmin G8 yet ?

https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/sports/golfing/approach-g8/prod144530.html

I've had a skycaddie SGX since they were released and I'm now on my 5th, or could 6th replacement. I like the unit when it works, but it's starting to show it's age compared to some of the newer GPS's out there. Like the G8.

I read a review in one of the rival mags (I know don't shoot me), and it's the first time I've seen a skycaddie beaten to the top spot. This time by the this G8 unit.

I really like the idea of a touch screen as opposed to buttons, and also no subscription fees. Purchase cost of the unit is a little high, but that doesn't bother me too much.

Thoughts ?

If you search my threads i enquired about the G3, 5 and 6. I've taken the plunge today with the 6. I have been researching all of them for a few weeks now. The G8 has a few extra functions like showing you where the pin is if you are playing blind etc, it also shows you how far a hole is playing (taking into consideration up or down hill etc). Plus it allows you to connect your phone. I don't think though looking at all those features it is worth more than the G6 which is has so ma features. I would recommend looking at the G6 like i have done as i think it is a brilliant piece of kit. You can get it for £179 which is a lot cheaper than £333 which i think is the current best price for the G8. Something to consider as it is a lot more money for little gain - in my opinion. :smirk:

Wouldn't the slope thing make it non-conforming in comps?

Good point.

Yup, or at least it should make it non-conforming. The club advice feature.
Hops straight off the flowchart at the first hurdle.

Is this device capable of measuring conditions or providing information other than distance (e.g. slope, wind, temperature or club recommendation)?.

Garmin would probably argue that they only provide distance and the rules are still pretty vague. Technically it doesn't measure conditions and doesn't provide any information other than distance. Although the club recommendation part can't be got round when taking a literal reading of the rule. Regardless of whether it's used or not the answer to the question "is it capable?" is Yes.

Better off with the G6 since the G7 also has the non conforming features.
